Marzipan Babies

Status: Not Marzipan
I'm a big fan of Marzipan. In fact, I've made several pilgrimages to Lübeck, home of Niederegger, makers of the best marzipan in the world (in my opinion). So I was intrigued by these pictures of tiny babies supposedly made out of marzipan. I don't see why one couldn't make lifelike dolls out of marzipan, but that's not the case with these dolls. They're actually made by the artist Camille Allen out of polymer clay or resin, and they're not edible. Still, in the past it was apparently possible to buy jelly babies, as well as chocolate babies. So why not marzipan babies? (via Strong Chemistry)

What's marzipan?
Posted by Razela  on  Fri Oct 14, 2005  at  07:32 PM
Marzipan is sweetened almond paste. It's used to make fanicful confections, usually little fruits and vegetables.

I want to know what the hair is made out of, before I pop one of those babies in my mouth.

Actually, those are made of polymer clay, not marzipan. You can do a search for this story on snopes.com.

argh this is horrible, its a case of somebody making something they think will be cute and ends up just disturbing... little tiny foetus babies oooh fun.. and your supposed to eat them??? that cant be good for sanity sitting around munching on your foetus candy

Katey and joeodd, read the bloomin' text!
They're made out of polymer resin (plastic), not marzipan!

That leaves open the question of why somebody would want to make such a thing, of course.

Somebody said what are they for? They'd be cute in a doll house, but I'd want diapers on them. I had thought they'd be nice favors at a baby shower, but I just cruised the site, and the little fellows are VERY expensive. All of them are sold out, and you have to be put on a mailing list to be informed of the next bunch for sale. The creator must be getting rich!

Yes, they would be adorable scaled to a dollhouse, along with other fmaily members...but if the artist prices even the baby so high, the rest of the family would be truly prohibitive! As to why, she created them, well, dollmakers have been trying to create babydolls with more and more lifelike features for a long time...She is truly an artist, I'd say. And in answer to one of the earlier posts, why should a miniature baby be gross, when we love to give our kids small stuffed animals? Biting the head off one, well, yes, that ranks up there in my gross-o-meter

considering these are not just "sugar babies" but done in a poly-resin,they are a remarkable piece of artwork - their lifelike appearance is makes a mother's heart skip a beat! The rest of you with negative comments, well - perhaps you're too absorbed in your own selves to see how emotionally infectious they really are.

Here's the website for the CLAY babies (not fetuses) but they range from $300 to $1,000 so probably not good baby shower favors.

"...but they range from $300 to $1,000 so probably not good baby shower favors."

Not to worry. If they catch on, I'm sure some cheap knock-offs will appear before long. Coming soon to a dollar store near you ...

I've got an idea. Why don't all you people who want to purchase some of these actually LOOK AT HER FREAKING WEBSITE instead of posting useless comments here.

Thank you, and have a nice day.

Putting the real Jelly Babies in the past tense nearly caused me to have a second heart attack. What on earth was I going to scoff while waiting in the car for my wife while she checks every item in the antique shops on our next trip to England?
Thankyou thankyou John Wilson and Cadbury.

Oh My God!!!! This is going to be another of those stupid threads where people keep posting the same thing over and over again because they're too stupid to bother reading what came before them.

Shoot me now.
Posted by Charybdis  on  Mon Nov 14, 2005  at  09:42 AM
Why such an attitude? As they say if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all.I was also taught there is no stupid question.Tis the season to be jolly!!! Try it! I would have read more if I was allowed, couldn't get anything to come up at the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by sue_52732  on  Tue Nov 15, 2005  at  01:48 PM
You were taught wrong then. It's just incredibly aggravating to have all these people posting the same things over and over because they can't be bothered to read the posts. In time there will be hundreds of duplicate requests out here, each one looking like a fool. We've seen it before.

I just love the marzipan babies. I am a labor and delivery nurse and collect "Baby ornaments" such as tthis. They are amazing, they lookso much like some of the premature infants we deliver. I s there a website where they can be purchased? Please advise. Thank you. Dawn Gemmill
Posted by Dawn Gemmill  on  Thu Nov 17, 2005  at  11:02 AM
Ebay has babies made from polymer clay. Some look very nice and some not so great. You just have to pick and choose, but the ones I've seen are EXTREMELY well priced... very inexpensive. I don't think a lot of them realize they could get more than they're asking. 😊

omg i want one of these really bad can you purchuse these at stores or just online?
Posted by janiece bennett  on  Thu Dec 22, 2005  at  12:34 PM
Personally, I find them a bit disturbing. I found them extremely disturbing when I thought they were edible and slighly less to find out they were art. However, for some reason I don't find them the least bit "cute". I'm not sure why. It just seems sick to me for some reason. I looked at her web site and I just couldn't help but think that the babies with their eyes closed all looked dead to me. Like in the 1800's when people used to photograph the dead.
Did anyone else have this reaction or does everyone want to own one of these things?
Posted by Glamcat  on  Tue Dec 27, 2005  at  06:43 PM
Hey Glamcat, long time no see. I agree with you, these images bother me alot. I can't get the image of people just popping them in their mouths out of my mind. It seems odd that people would find these 'cute'.

WHERE CAN I BUY SOME!!! Where? Where? Where? okay, now that I probably added to the aggravation of the 2nd person, it is possible to make something of this detail with marzipan. The end

I was sent an e-mail with the pictures of the marzipan babies and was totally impressed. I have a son & daughter each having a baby so it caught my eye even more. I would be interested in getting the web site to order one or two. I realize they are expensive but let me judge if it's too much for me. I have spent the last hour trying to find out how to order and this site was the closest I have come. Please send me some information.

I think that this is awesome! I would love to have one that is custom made for the way that my daughter and my son looked as they were small. My daughter is now 9 mos and my son 7 years! I would just want to freeze frame that time! Could that be done? Make them and keep them for that long?
