Unfortunate Last Names

I've always thought my last name was pretty bad. And I mean that in the literal sense. 'Boese' means 'bad' (or angry) in German. But its meaning wouldn't matter much if only English-speaking people could pronounce it (it's 'burr-za', as if it had an 'r' in it... not 'boose'). But I shouldn't feel too sorry for myself, because this guy in Brazil, Mr. Reinhardt Adolfo Fuck, has me beat hands down. As far as I can tell, that really is his name. He must get endless jokes about it.

I work in market research. We are still chuckling about the doctor named Richard Kisser. Think about the most common nickname for Richard, and you will wonder, as I do, how the poor guy made it through middle school. And what were his parents thinking?

Along the same vein as the name discussed by Teresa, I had a boyhood friend named Harold Dick...you can see where that led!! Eventually his mother remarried and he was able to change it before he graduated from HS. My teenaged daughter swears that she once had a substitute teacher whose name was Ms. Cunt. I never really beleived that one.

Here in Israel we have a man who hosts E!-style TV programs named Guy Pines, pronounced "Penis". The Coen Brothers joke about him in the commentery of "The Man Who Wasn't There" DVD. They say he insists on telling people to pronounce it "Penis" and not "PY-inz". Go figure. They also mention a reporter named Hans Fuck.

Pines is a surname of quite a few people here. We even have a place called "Kfar Pines", which I guess can be translated to "Penis Village".

A guy from Italy called Piero Pascarelli moved to Helsinki, Finland, and after a while decided he had to change his name. Why? Because 'pieru' in Finnish means 'fart' and 'paska' means 'shit'. Anywhere he introduced himself people would assume it was some kind of a joke and look funny at him.

Fans of European football and particularly the Championship Manager series of computer games might recall the Brazilian footballer named Argel.
Although it is common for south American footballers to be referred to by their nicknames, Argel was probably keener than most to be called by his nickname as his real name was Argelico Fucks.
