LA Times on Ghosts and eBay

The LA Times has just discovered something that I've been saying for ages: haunted stuff sells well on eBay. As they put it: "Having exhausted bad taste and banality, it appears EBay sellers have moved on to a new marketing strategy — the paranormal. Everything "haunted" is so hot, EBay could launch a new category." But still, the LA Times is only seeing half the story here. What's interesting is not just that people are selling lots of haunted things on eBay. After all, there's always been a market for the paranormal. What's interesting is the new market for haunted junk that eBay has created. Take any old crap that's been collecting dust around your house: an old jar, a Coke can, a broken toaster. Slap a haunted label on it, make up a story about it, and hey presto, sell it on eBay for hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars.

Which makes me wonder... Why haven't I done it yet?!?

When the LA Times gets on to it, it's a clear sign that the phenomenon is no longer of interest. Time to move on...

Remember this phenomenon of people buying "haunted" things on eBay the next time someone makes a comment about superstition in third-world countries (or any other culture, for that matter). We just aren't all that sophisticated, people.

On a closely related subject, at one time real estate agents would never mention that a murder had occured on the property, for the last few decades they brag about it as a selling point.

I would live in a house where a murder occured. I don't see the big deal. Unlike some, I feel like a person's soul goes to Heaven or Hell. No ifs, ands, or buts. The 'haunting' of place is not some poor dead person, but instead one of Satan's minions. He's trying to trick you & it's not difficult. He's been using the same tricks for centuries.

Sorry, Meagan, but that's superstitious nonsense with no basis in fact. Your (presumably sincere) belief is not a substitute for fact. There is NO credible scientific evidence for the notion of ghosts or Satan.

You may believe, with every fiber of your being, that the Earth is flat, but that will not make it so.

You ARE being fooled, but not by "Satan." You're fooling yourself and yes, you're right, it isn't difficult. People do it every day.

Hey crankymediaguy, there is no reason for such prejudgice here. I wonder why your bigoted comment got through. Please stop your hate speach.

Christopher, I vet the comments. What do you find bigoted about crankymediaguy's comment? (or were you joking?)

I'm fascinated. What, exactly, was "bigoted" about what I said? Because I said--accurately--that there is no scientific basis for the belief in ghosts or Satan, that constitutes "hate speach" [sic]? How?

Am I now required to believe every cockamamie thing that anyone else professes a belief in? OR do you want to take away my right to say--again, accurately--that there is no scientific basis for those beliefs?

What about those who might believe in a God other than yours and say that they disagree with you? Would THAT, too, constitute "hate speach" [sic]?

If you think that there is scientific evidence for the existance of Satan, please direct me to where I can find it. Thanks.

Flip the comments by crankymediaguy around, he attacked Meagan's beliefs equating something he admits as unprovable with something provable. Belief in ghosts, Satan, Heavan or Hell is not the same as believing that the Earth is flat. Crankymediaguy attacked Meagan personally for her beliefs, beliefs he has no proof are wrong. I pointed out that his comments are bigoted and intolerant since I do not know that crankymediaguy is a bigot, he could have just shot his mouth off without realizing how his comments could be taken. If Meagan believes in Satan and Hell, that is not proof that she is a fool, I have known some very foolish people who were of the exact opposite beliefs. Who defines bigotry and hate speech, the perpetrator or the victim? Not believing in something does not require that you attack as a fool someone who does. That should have gone out with the Religious Wars centuries ago.

Wow, I'm not even going to get in on that argument, but on the topic about houses that had had murders in them: Chris, are you sure about houses with a history of a murder selling well? Down the street from my house, there was a murder involving a little girl. The houses of both the murderer and the victim (because they lived a few houses down from each other) sold for very little money. I'm not sure exactly how much, but if I remember correctly, the realtors kept having to lower the price before they could find someone to buy each house. The fact is, most people don

I am operating on a memory from several years back and it might have been a California phenominum (sp?) because I think that what I read about was talking about Los Angles. Probably was mid to late 90's when I read about this. The gist of the report was that this was something that showed no signs of slacking, only getting bigger. The houses mentioned sold for as much as two or three times original asking if I remember right.

Why is Meagan not acused of being the bigot or prejudice ? She has accused anyone who does not believe in Heaven and Hell or anyone who believes in Ghosts a fool.
I wouldn't make an accusation of bigotry against someone for insisting that statements be based in fact. And there shouldn't need to be a qualifying reminder that Faith is not fact.
But we are talking about haunted houses here so who cares about provable fact anyway ?

Silas Wirths, I lived in a house I believed was haunted at the time (1966-67) but I haven't been there since and have no idea if anyone else has ever experienced what I did. The house was (is?) a tri-level with the kitchen and dining room on the bottom level, the living room on the middle level and the three bedrooms and the only bathroom on the top level. My bedroom was the one at the top of the stairs. Some nights I could hear someone climbing the stairs, each step creaked in sequence, and walk into the bathroom and shut the door. Each time I would look and the door was open. This happend about once every six or seven weeks or so, so you might need two months if you can stay there. The house was not the scene of a murder, nor was it built on a graveyard nor was there any suspicious deaths of any sort before my family moved in. As far as I know. It was a fairly new house so I doubt it was settling noises, besides the stairs were walked in sequence and the bathroom door distinctly closed. My parent rented the house and later moved to one they bought so I have no idea if the house still exists, or if it does, if anyone is there. The address is 11770 Thistlehill Dr Loveland OH. Now that you've reminded me, I would be interested in knowing if anyone else ever experienced this walker.
