Bigfoot Prank

WTVY News reports on a prank that reminded me of the Winsted Wild Man hoax from 1895, although quite a bit less sensational:
A teenager wore an outfit depicting the mythical Bigfoot creature. He then carried a fellow young person on each shoulder.
Alarmed residents called the sheriff's department and several others armed with shotguns headed to where the prank was taking place.
The young people, ranging in age from 18-to-23, were given a warning.
However, sheriff's officials say those involved in any copycat incidents will face reckless endangerment charges.

Is it just me, or does this not seem like a huge overreaction?

The police let them off with a warning? The only crime committed here is the pranksters underestimated the stupidity of the local people. Check out the other Bigfoot story on that media's website:

"He could have thrown me two-hundred yards back with the others. He was in excess of eight feet tall, and four-foot wide. Just looking at him, you could tell he was very powerful."

Who were they supposed to have been recklessly endangering?
Themselves (given the apparently large population of shotgun-wielding meatheads thereabouts)?

They would have actually shot someone wearing what was nothing but a questionable halloween costume, a chia pet gone bad? If this whole thing wasn't tongue in cheek, I'm glad I've held off having kids.

Judging by the photo accompanying the article, this is clearly a hoax. Witnesses did NOT see Bigfoot --- they saw Swamp Thing!
