Ban On Anime

An email has been going around urging people to sign this petition:

To:  George Bush
Some people are signing against anime and are calling is to be a "perverse, evil, insiduous form of animation from the dark land of Japan, and is corrupting America's youth at unprecedented rates." Anime is NOT corrupting the youth of America, and since when has America become a country of Christians? Isn't there a SEPARATION of Church and State? Isn't this a ban on our Freedom of Speech? And Freedom of Press? What does anime have to do with brainwashing our youth?

Even though I'm not sure what 'signing against anime' is supposed to mean, I do know that there is no movement underfoot by any politician to ban anime. But it's worth scrolling through the messages left by the 4129 people who signed the petition. Some of them are quite amusing.

WTF! Bush can't do that. Anime is very popular. There are some series that are educational. Fullmetal Alchemist talks a lot about History, especially in the movie.

Honestly, they have no rights. . .

Anime is very important in some kid's lives. Banning it wouldn't make most kids happy. My son won't read anything besides a manga book, even though thats the only thing he reads, its still reading. Before he knew about it he wouldn't pick up a book. Anime isn't just about being killed, some talk about teen love and life of a teen couple. It gives some teen's a look of life. Anime is bad, its good.

This person is serously on crack. I swear, if Anime does get baned, I will personaly become an enemy of the state! Just call me-dramatic pause-ANIME GAL! :ahhh:(Men in white pull me away) Or maybe I should just move to Japan. 9_9!

All right people. everyone just get a grip and stop whining, complaining, cussing, bitching, and threatening each other and Bush. He himself cannot put a ban on anything.
If some of you would study on how the American Government works, you would realize that this all got started by a letter from an angry parent that caught their kid watching some anime that had nudity in it or some such thing.
Also, every show has merit, despite the fact it may offend some. Take South Park for example. Highly offensive and full of uncouth language, and the characters make fun of many subjects. That's where the key is. The creators have the balls to make fun of extremely serious subjects, which is why so many watch.
And sara hazuda, thank you for bringing up the point of Harry Potter. Do you know how many parents have off off about it? "She's a witch""She's trying to make our children into devil worshippers", so on and so forth. That's the argument.
However, once they've sat down and actually started reading the books, they change.
People tend to go against things they do not understand, therefore they are ignorant and do not know what they speak of.
If Bush really wanted to push the issue of banning Anime, he'd probably make a statement about it.
As I said before, stop and take the time to study how the govt system works, so that you don't an arse of yourself.

Okay, to be honest, it seems this is a hoax. But if it wasn't, I would definitely have to say that SOME anime is a LITTLE too much, but that doesn't mean you have to watch it. Hentai is different from anime. You don't HAVE to watch Anime. And in no way is Anime trying to make people join the Japanese army. Uhh, hello, since when was Japan ever jealous of our "power"? All what America does is bomb Civilians of other places and destroy families. Anyhow... Banning anime would be UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Which is why this seems to be a hoax. There's anime for children, Teens, and adults. I don't think that your parent/s would let you watch something too much for you if you were still under their care. Duh. :/
Posted by Jamie  on  Mon Jul 31, 2006  at  11:51 AM
*sigh* All this big fuss because a person wrote an angry letter? It says at the top that it is a hoax. No need to worry about it. So..you guys don't really need to whine so much. I am a huge fan of anime....but I atleast came out of anime-like daydreams long enough to pay attention in American History...Although, reading all the comments on the petition was funny. Everyone getting so worked up over something so trivial. Anyone with a working brain would've known it was a hoax from the start but oh well. None of the anime shows are bad, really. It just depends on if you are mature enough to watch them and not freak out and be like "OMG! LYKE THAT IS SOOOOO TOTALLY DISGUSTING!" -_- ...

On a side note: I really like the fact that in Japan you can fall in love with whomever you want to, and still be married. Whether it be the same sex, a cousin, someone older.....I admire Japan for that. ^-^

I like anime, but people shut the fuck up!
Anime can't be banned nation-wide by a petition!
Anime brings in too much money to be banned, it'd be like a ban on smoking and porn, so many addicts can't get enough of it SO, they shell out money for it. Anime would have to become an industy of child porn or something to get banned nation-wide, and even then, people can and will find other ways of getting anime. Plus, there'd be too much protest against the ban, so the ban wouldn't last very long. And, if they were going to ban anime because they think it's messing our youth up, then television, the Internet, radio, music, video/computer games, porn, and even books should be banned as they have content that is not for children as well. But if you do that then you have banned a lot of forms of lesiure, that is liked by many people. But all these bans are UNCONSTITUTIONAL and would never, ever happen! Because as long as people enjoy something, it's here to stay. And to those who love Japan because of anime, please quit being fanboy/fangirls! Anime is great, I deeply enjoy it, but really Japan isn't all anime! You might want to actually read a history textbook instead of a manga! Quit naming a bunch of anime like your so all-knowing about Japan and it's culture!
Mainly that 10 year old, listing a bunch of anime and a lot of stupid ones at that!
You learn so much from anime then you have to research the culture to understand. This petition means nothing! So quit overreacting over a joke, and think with a full deck!

DONT BAN ANIME!!!!!!!it doesnt brain wash america please whatever you do dont ban anime I like almost all anime show what ever you do please keep anime :grrr:
Posted by Sakura  on  Wed Aug 02, 2006  at  08:07 AM
Everyone just stop posting with this "Please don't ban anime" in your posts as it can't be banned anyway! How retarded you have to be in order to overreact over to a hoax! This site is called "Museum of Hoaxes" for fucks sake!
Quit whining, showing Bush that you're weak.
If you really think anime will get banned then do something to show that you care about what you are standing up for! And since anime can't be banned anyway, your efforts may result in more anime titles in the US. So actually do something instead of just talking about it online!
Posted by Joey  on  Wed Aug 02, 2006  at  01:00 PM
I've always loved anime. Atleast kids are reading and they're reading something they're interested in. this is just like when the harry potter books came out. if you take away anime you destroy a piece of creativity and without creativity we truely have nothing left.
Posted by miles  on  Sat Aug 05, 2006  at  07:29 PM
I don't care if Bush were my friggin mother!!!! 🧛 I still wouldn't let him take away my sweet precious Naruto!!! I need anime or I'll never obay any law again for the rest of my life!!!!!
Posted by Animelover2007  on  Mon Aug 07, 2006  at  05:01 PM
Who ever started that petitoon has some kind of brain disorder. If people choose to watch anime, then let them be! We each have our rights and many of us love anime!!!

Seriously you can't just ban Anime because some of them contain "unsuitable" themes. Some animes are even ment for kids, and they love it!

I swear that stupid person should just mind his/her buisness... Besides, if he/she really hates Anime this much, why bother taking the time? Would it be "Not worth my time" As many say?

i cant belive anybody fell for this in the first place. next thing u know they'll supposedly be signing a bill to ban porn or the teletubbies.

But I actually saw a petition on http://www.petition.com going around, and it already had like 7000 signitures. So it is real, isn't it?
Posted by Tina  on  Wed Aug 16, 2006  at  04:27 AM
The petition is real. The ban is not.

People started the petition because they're stupid. Not only is there not a ban in the works, but online petitions have zero impact on policy. Nobody takes online petitions seriously because they are staggeringly easy to fake.
Posted by Charybdis  on  Wed Aug 16, 2006  at  10:21 AM
Lol, I know the ban isn't real, I was just stating that whoever started that petiton has some kind of brain disorder

Ok, I have studied Japanese and hentai(Hen/ta/i) means pervert, not porn you morons.
Another hentai means metamorphisis(Insect)

I thought it was hillarious that people are believing this hoax. I love anime insanely but come on...why on earth would they ban it? If they banned that they'd also have to ban manga, video games, who knows what else. If those were the basis of the ban, there'd be too much they'd have to ban under that rule. Those that believed it, really weren't of sound mind, now were they?
Posted by Dena  on  Thu Aug 24, 2006  at  01:46 PM
anime is the greatest people are jus stupid. i love anime, manga and anything else. but its highly impossible to ban it so no worries

Anime, it is the creation of unhappiness to create happiness, weird. those japanese artists who draw and create anime to entertain us have made some of us blind. watching shows of anime over and over about the same thing , some big eyed girl or boy out to save the world with their partner who they fall in love with. pitiful , but even more so is the fact its growing, expanding around the world being put into everything. those who do watch anime have become pitiful creatures that become painful to watch as they dress as anime characters they dream to be but never will. so what will happen to the kids of the future and so on. already there are kids who have anime mercahndise and clothes and talk about the new anime shows and literally base their lives on anime, scary. lets make sure this never happens so we can ensure soething bright for the future. but hey what do I know Im just a kid not the big eyed freaks who tell you what to do. DAH
Posted by DAH (aka dark anime hatred)  on  Sat Sep 30, 2006  at  11:27 PM
Well, if you think that anime is just "some girl with big eyes" then you got a lot to learn. That's your problem if you don't like anime, so just leave us anime fans continue on with out 'obsesive lives' ok?
Posted by Taina  on  Sun Oct 01, 2006  at  05:57 AM
DAH, people get obsessive about a lot of different things. A lot ot Trekkies dress up in Star Trek uniforms, a lot of people dress up in military uniforms portraying someone from the American Revolution or the Civil War. People dress up as knights etc for The Society for Creative Anacronisms or Renassance (sp?) Festivals. The cartoon genre, of which anime is a part, is a fun way to spend some time. Cartoons allow the producer to create situations that can't happen in real life since a cartoon character does not have to obey the laws of physics. Some anime is mindless fluff, so are many Hollywood movies. Some anime is predictable, again so are many Hollywood movies. Whatever you can say against anime, can be said against Hollywood also with as much truth. Most fans of anime have a life - I suggewst you try to get one as well.
Posted by Christopher Cole  on  Sun Oct 01, 2006  at  02:59 PM
i ttly agree. there are just as many "bad" anime shows as there is "bad" hollywood movies. take away hentai, take away porn.
take away anime, take away cartoons.
take away manga, take away comic books.
thats how i see it. an eye for an eye.
ANIME FOREVER!!!!!>_<

the society are just a bunch of hipocrythes... The world is screwed alredy, with rapers, crime, drugs, etc... I see really horrible things all the time in real life, in the news, paper... Things that traumate people, drive then nuts, and make them do crazy stuff, is all in real life, and people who think that forbiding something is going to make a change, they are just decieving themselves, because when you forbid something people tend to look for it more, and coparing the REAL horrible things that happens in real life with animated violence? lol it just make you look stupid, or that you dont have any life experience yet =/

Oh by the way, when i said rapers, i mean by rape, not rap music (got a bit rusty on english) =P

i don't see why the us would ban anime/manga. it piss me off bc its the only thing i like 2 watch/read. any1 who said this corrupts the youth shoud be a parent and not let them watch/read it. its that simple.

kind of disagree with this statment "since when has America become a country of Christians?" most of are four fathers were or belived in there principles so that was kind of a dumb statement.

Wow, stuff I end up locating in my periods of extreme boredom!

I'll keep short and sweet, and sad to a point.

1: Online petitions appear to be a waste of time and space, but alas. It's the internet. Free is free, and passing time is passing time.

2: That petition was pretty funny. But sadly, sometimes I wish to agree with that logic. (Although by no means in an extreme 'Right Wing' sort of way.) In my time of increasing depression over the loss of anime to the hungry and cruel American business market, I find myself wishing for the old days when only a handful of people knew what Japanese animation actually was, and there was no "Japanophiling" going on. It's gotten to the point of being rather ridiculous now a days.

Lalalala *walks in and sees this predicament* Oh my. Oh my, oh my. This just will not do. *shakes head sadly* Even if it a hoax, it still breaks my heart that people think all anime is pornographic. They've obviously never seen Fancy Lala, Magical Meow Meow Taruto, and many other shows just like it that have nothing to do with porn, much less /child/ porn. That's just sick. And what other perverted people do in their spare time with the characters of anime is not in any way anime's fault. Ugh.

Well, that's all I have to say for now, but I'll probably be back.

A die-hard anime fan willing to go to jail for it,

Geeze IdRaWaNiMe, such vehemence. Who exactly are you yelling at here? After all, it's just a post about a bogus email. None of us were trying to ban anime, and yet you come on here yelling. You're exactly the type of person the email was aimed at - those who spout off without bothering to stop and think first. As such I have to say the email is a success. Burn!
Posted by Charybdis  on  Mon Feb 05, 2007  at  07:56 AM
My friend is Japanese too and found it really offensive and here was my other friends response:

Dear Mr. Fuller,

I've come to the conclusion that you have helped write this petition. After reading it, there are many things incorrect with it.

1. Ah! My Goddess and Love Hina are not meant for children. The DVD cases blatantly state "For Ages 16+" or "For Ages 17+". Use common sense, please.

2. In Ah! My Goddess, the goddess Belldandy is NOT under 18 years of age. She is probably much older, because she is a goddess. Again, common sense.

3. You don't state which George Bush the petition is to go to. Do some research next time.

4. The "Responsible Americans Against Child Exploitation" is not a real organization. Google and Wikipedia, high traffic ranked web sites on the internet, came up with nothing. Compared to your fake organization, you'd at least get my self-created web site for my cosplay group, the Neko Mercenaries Group Indignation.

5. What the hell? Your email address has "neko", the Japanese word for "cat", in it, and yet you wrote a petition against anime? You're a fluke!

6. "As a resonsible Christian, I demand to see this garbage removed from our nation. Please sign this petition and send it to George Bush, your Congressman, and the makers/distributors of anime filth and depravity. "

WHOA WHOA WHOA! You're a Christian (Maybe you aren't, but you helped write the petition, you're getting a flame and a half.), and yet you think George Bush (Which one again? That wasn't stated.) will listen to you? Hey, here's something you should research: Separation of Church and State. It's part of the United States Constitution. I don't think you're going to win this. Oh, and use a spell checker. It's spelled "responsible".

All in all, you have lost this, and a petition was created just now (7:23 PM, January 15, 2007) to petition your petition.

Sincerely,

-Seph-kun

Hey um I'm not sure if this ban on anime is real or not but seriously why would you ban anime? Most people who watch it watch it to get their minds off of things, or at least I do. I'm a HUGE anime fan and if they wanna ban anime then they should ban pornography and R-rated movies while they're at it. I'm sure those are even more offensive to people than anime is. Yeah anime does have some graphic ones but it's not anyones choice but the person who watches it to watch it. (If that made any sense)
Posted by Sarah  on  Tue Mar 20, 2007  at  02:58 PM
this petition is funny. people are fucking morons, I can't believe that they would even try to do this. There is more anime in the USA then there is movies made in the usa. No one will be able to ban anime. hentai maybe, but it will be all underground! Stupid people never heard of P2P programs? they should be found, beat to death with a mop stick, and left for dead!

Get a fucking life, and get over it. If you don't want anime in your house, then buy tivo or whatever to block it. But I can tell you now, you will never be able to block anime, you block anime you block all cartoons, and everything from cartoons, to the oprah bitch that you watch for 3 hours a day. Have fun watching a black blank screen you fuckers!

I hope congress bans anime because it's using subliminal messages (sending messages to the subconcious mind which then processes them to make you do it without your consent) to get people to hate America. Anime is sick and disgusting because about 95% of it contains traces of porn, and in most cases, the whole thing is porn. All they are doing is sending their perverted customs into America, and making the next generation of children filthy anime porn addicts who hate the country they were born in.
Posted by Animesucks  on  Tue Apr 10, 2007  at  08:38 AM
Animesucks WTF is wrong with you... are you just one of those paranoid retards that thinks that everything is a conspiracy. Its not turning all the kids in America into brainwashed porn addicts that only live for anime porn, anime is just fun to read and get into. People will always read anime DEAL WITH IT!!!
Posted by InternetNinja  on  Tue Apr 10, 2007  at  01:53 PM
Of course, the problem with such a ban is that it is an act against a form of expression. Such a ban would, therefore, be unconstitutional as it's contrary to the 1st Amendment.

Furthermore, you would have media companies that would also rally to fight against such a ban if it were to occur since many do earn money producing and localizing anime for the American market. And, even companies that do not produce anime could see the precedent that such a ban could entail and would also fight against such a ban. Plus, there would be civil rights organizations such as the ACLU that would rally against a ban. And, this is on top of regular people who enjoy anime who may also act to see that such a ban be rejected.

In all, a call for such a ban would have to be a hoax or from a harebrained moron who wants to dictate to others what is acceptable and what is not. - Reinhart

The president banning anime????????!!!!!!!!! Geez.... Dispeakable........ What dont he say about American teen dramas that are negative impact on children....... Why not about American animations as well that are too typical causing intimidation for some young teenagers........ For example, basically if we dont follow what teen celebrities wear in America, sometimes we are rather referred as aliens to them...... Why not say the American pop culture that drive some younger generation to insanity........ Look how some young celebrities had polluted some of the minds and 'clean' of our current generation........ If anime is evil then why premier Pokemon, Shaman King and Yu-gi-oh, arent they also 'evil' anime as referred by some Christian families...... I dont understand..... Why mention only Ah! My Goddess and Love Hina?! But no matter how hard porn is to be stopped, some young people will still have access to them wide online at homes in America....... Just because I like anime comedy like Love Hina does not make me a lecher! Duh?! Ah,well, just my opinion!

If the president hates Japanese that does not make him a good Christian either...... Because to hate someone means to 'kill' them..... And as Christians, we do not hate because we are God's precious children......

Imagine I've met some of my Christian friends that even said that hentai anime is no different since in general some of them seem 'equivalent' to 'Hollywood' adult themed films......
Posted by C-Ann  on  Fri Apr 13, 2007  at  11:59 AM
If anime is banned, that also means he will be insulting the most loved of all time Miyazaki Hayao who produced famous Ghibli films..... Ghibli films are also movie anime anyways....... And Ghibli films are very meaningful to young teenagers, families and even young children....... If anime is banned, that may mean in the future young children will never ever have chance to watch Tottoro.........
Posted by C-Ann  on  Fri Apr 13, 2007  at  12:09 PM
I dont mean the president hate Japanese, just animation in general..... Sorry if meant offenses with words.....

Just that some young American generation lack decency these days.... Because of the deep influence of pop culture of them...... particularly Hollywood in general, some teen dramas with all the cultural stereotypes, how young celebrities dress that some young people tried to follow...... Just to conclude it is hard these days to define what is decent and right in terms of media these days..... well, anime is part of media tat was why...... Ciao~~~~

Ah, many morons on both sides of the debate here...

1. Most Christians aren't like the nonsensical authors of that so-called petition.
2. Those flaming the petition authors are using a equally as nonsensical logic as the petition authors themselves.
3. Please do not try to sound like you're intelligent and then claim there is a Separation of Church & State when there is none. Read the Constitution.

Though I disagree with the authors of this petition, I am both an Evangelical Christian and an avid Anime fan. I believe that there should always be intellectual debates on controversial subjects. But once you start coming off as being as equally moronic as those whom you're trying to debate it ceases being a debate and becomes a hissing match. Which in the end gets us nowhere.

Btw, do not worry about a banning of Anime in the United States, since it violates no obscenity laws, Anime is considered protected speech. You're more likely to see a ban on softcore pornography before Anime, and we all know its highly unlikely that that would happen in our lifetime.

People like you that think you are so much above everyone else, well guess what, your not. In fact you are worse than everyone else because of that mindset, I have dealt with people like you before, and I have learned its not worth my time. No matter how much you refuse to believe it you are the close minded type that thinks they are open minded. So just go thinking you are better than all the people here.
Posted by InternetNinja  on  Sun Apr 15, 2007  at  11:43 PM
Okay...this is just plain damned ridiculous.
One) stop with the name calling. It's stupid and wastes time.
Two) Never ever ever accuse anyone of being either open or closed minded. You don't know anything about any of the other people here, so it makes you look like an ass.
Three)Before you start calling someone else an idiot, make sure you check your post for errors. Atleast then, they can't call you a hypocritical idiot.
Four)BUSH CANNOT BAN ANIME!!!!! I have said this before. Study the american government people!!!
There is one section of congress that deals entirely with the media. Japan is one of our biggest trading countries. Do you really think we're stupid enough to really fuck ourselves over that much?
The only thing Bush can do is suggest that the more graphic shows and movies be shown at a time when it would be least likely for a bunch of little kids to be watching.

That's all for now and have a nice day.
Posted by VampireChild21  on  Mon Apr 16, 2007  at  10:18 AM
Making some pretty big assumptions there now aren't we, InternetNinja? Calling me that without any evidence so that you may cut off any opportunity for an intellectual debate. Now whose the one being closed minded?

About my mindset, did you come to that conclusion because I criticized the logic behind your previous posts? Or, is it that you are one whose logic comes from those who are prejudicial toward all who hold to a faith in the supernatural?
