I don't know if it is really true or not, but I would say yes. This is only from observation though - up till recently one of my sad hobbies was watching gas prices. On death-intensive days, the price would go up as the news broke or by the nextmorning at the latest. But, Chicago gas stations are notorious for going up at the slightest provocation. 😉 |

Okay, one thing I just CAN NOT stand is people who whine about paying half of what I have to pay for gas.
Now that THAT's out of the way...
There is no way in hell that the price of gas should fluctuate in any way, shape, or form because more people got killed one day than the next. That has NOTHING to do with the production or shipping costs of said gasoline.
The US has a fairly large reserve of oil, enough to last a while if all of it's foreign oil inputs suddenly stopped. The only way that gas price should fluctuate is if the external oil input was lessened enough to cause a shortage.
BUT, would that not mean that any store that's running short on something gets to charge more for the little they have left? Why the hell do we accept this from the gas companies? We don't accept it from anyone else. |

The current price of gas here is....
Drum roll, please.....
89.9 cents.
PER LITRE
4 litres per galon means... 4 times 89.9, which totals out to $3.59.6 per gallon.
Ain't it great? |

Whoever thought that the metric system works well was right. Everything in it is base 10.
The problem, though, is that it has to have universal implementation, which it does not. So we have to learn BOTH systems just to understand what the hell is going on.

One thing Rod forgot to mention about Canadian gas prices is that 45% of the cost is tax. In fact some of taxes on gas are taxed too. You Americans think YOU have corrupt government? |

Wow, I thought us aussies had bad petrol prices...currently $1.08 per litre with it expected to reach tops of $1.14. I only do metric, so some other maths-whiz can work out what that is per gallon (don't forget the exchange rate too!) |
Katherine
|
Posted: Tue Mar 22, 2005 | 06:48 PM
Your math's just a smidgen off, Rod--one gallon of gas at 89.9 cents per liter is really around $3.40 or $3.41. And with the conversion to U.S. dollars, it's about $2.81-3 (depending on where you look up your currency conversions...not sure which is up-to-the-moment). That isn't great, either, but it's not as bad as four dollars per gallon... |

Thanks for doing it FOR me. 😉 |

Hey now, Rod! Precision is important in all areas of life! Do you want your heart surgeon to say, "Hmmm, I wonder where the heart is? Oh well, I'll probably be close enough---SLIIIIIIIIIIICE." And then he takes out your liver or something, and you have to sue for malpractice.

NO, I'd prefer that DIDN'T happen.
But then again, I was only talking about gas, not buying it.
Ask a surgeon how big your brain is, and he'll give you a general answer. Ask him how big your heart is and he'll tell you its about as big as your fist.
But when he cuts, he's a tad more accurate.
Precision where it's needed, baby.
That, and I was just feeling lazy and did a quick calculation in my head.
😜

Rod, I agree with you, we still have to pay those taxes. It's just that our slimy politicians like to let everyone believe the high prices are only a result of the world oil situation. Meanwhile they are bagging billions of dollars of extra revenue for themselves.
By the way, in your price conversion, did you take into account the difference between the size of the US gallon and the Imperial gallon? |

Don't forget barometric pressure difference between Canada and the US. And temperature - you're nut-freezing winters would affect volume so what was the temperature when you made your guesstimations? And relative humitity! Oh, and the corialis affect. Being farther north it won't be as pronounced as here in Texas. Does your gasoline drain clockwise or counterclockwise? And is your "weights and measures" bureau more or less corrupt than our own because that will affect the accuracy of your pumps. And being farther away from the sun than us will affect your sight so be sure to use a flashlight next time for sufficient light. And make sure that there are no Frenchies around because you know how they like to distort things.

...I get the damn pennies.
Anywho...I wonder about gas prices too...I know the gas stations here only make about $0.05/gallon regardless of the price consumers are paying. On my lunchbreak I saw a CITGO that had gas at $2.13/gallon. They're always a few cents higher than other places. Only 17% of gas come from Middle Eastern countries. So, how come the other 83% isn't cheaper? Isn't it up to Alaska to keep our costs down? Those damn frostbiters are getting paid for their oil. I bet they're driving up the prices on purpose, & when they have enough money they're going to become their own country. Cold bastards.
Oh well, maybe they'll invade Canada.
Hmm...When I started driving gas was $0.86/gallon. Five years later I'd rather spit in the tank than pay for gas. |

Yeah, Cappy Al, I remembered that from another thread that you mentioned it on... probably the car in the snow thingy.
And yes, picking people's butt in groups is great fun. At least on the Internet.
Stephen, the word is nickEL. For as picky as I am about people's spelling, I really don't understand how my head has not exploded from reading people's ramblings all over the internet. I've refrained from pointing this out most of the time, but for some reason this one (nickel) just BUGS THE SHIT out of me. (oh yeah, I remember, it's from grade six science when the teacher and I got into an argument about how it was spelled.) Anyway...
And you can find some good pics of the coins <a href="http://www.mint.ca/NR/exeres/000019f6uauumhtfvabguqsx/level2.asp?NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=%2fen%2fabout_the_mint%2fCirculation%2bCoins%2findex_circ%2ehtm&NRNODEGUID=%7b7477E1AA-001A-43EB-A569-767AA3CC7EC5%7d&NRQUERYTERMINATOR=1">here</a>.
And yes, invading Canada from Alaska would be quite possible, but why bother? Canada's already the finacial bitch of the Amerikan Govt. Anything the Americans want Canada to to is done through the threat of economic sanctions. |

DEAR VICTOM OF FUEL BARONS,
Gas prices have sored upward for the past several
months and they don't seem to be leveling off anytime
soon. I suggest a gas boycott to take place the first
weekend of August 2005. The start date of the boycott
will officially be MIDNIGHT August 5 and will end on
MIDNIGHT August 8 2005. The best way for this to work
is to get the message to THE MAJORITY OF people THAT
we can and to do this we need TO WORK TOGETHER.
Forward this email to everyone in your address book,
tell all your friends and family. On August 5-8 of
2005 we are not going to buy any gasoline for four
days. If you have friends in the press/media let them
know about this boycott. Tell them we are sick of
being robbed by the oil barons. Tell the world, that
on August 5-8 of 2005 we are not going to buy fuel.
For an added bonus I suggest everyone call in sick on
Friday the 5th and Monday the 8th and not even drive a
Motor Vehical for the four day boycott. I understand
that this is not likely to happen but it would
definately be the first of its kind and you would have
the satisfaction of knowing you were a part of it.
make t-shirts and buttons AND GIVE THEM AWAY. Lets
make it a national holiday. NO MORE HIGH GAS PRICES
WEEKEND.
The time is now and we ARE THE PEOPLE OF THIS GREAT
NATION, IT IS TIME TO UNITE AND STAND UP FOR OUR
RIGHTS FOR AFFORDIBLE GAS PRICES. Do not hesitate to
click forward and add names in your address book and
click send, it is so easy. Then on August 5-8 of 2005 DO YOUR PART AND
simply make plans to stay at home, take a walk, ride a
bike or any other activity that will assist you in not
driving a motor vehicle.
copy and paste this to every forum board, in everyemail you send. spread the message as fastest you can.
sincerely,
Travis Stutzman |

Hey Stephen, if you want paper money from Australia (note, only one 'i' in Australia) you'll be waiting a looooong time. We've upgraded to plastic. Actually, you Americans would love the original $5 plastic note - had this lovely feature of being able to deface the queen...it's also our smallest note denomination (although for how long is another question). 😏 |

I was pretty sure that it was Australia that I had seen that news-clip on. When it was on the news over here (Canada), they were making a big deal out of it being a protest against keeping the British monarchy in Australia.
I don't know whether that was a factor or not, you know how crap like that gets distorted. But removing the queen from OUR money would definately be a novelty few would pass up. |

Yeah, there was a malfunction with printing the notes - the $5 were the first to be printed on plastic, and that first print run was dodgy...end result, scratch the note, and the queen's head would come off...

Stephen, It seems your original question never got answered. I know the REAL reason why gasoline prices have gone up to these levels. It's not the war, it's because.... People are willing to pay that much. Exon and BP and all those gasoline refiners charge as much as people are willing to pay.
Everyone bought SUV's in the late 90s, demand for gas went up, and now they are paying the piper. You'll see gas prices drop a lot over the next ten years as people end their love-affairs with Hummers and Suburbans and start buying high-mileage vehicles and hybrids. |
