Not with Nyquil, but with a stop smoking patch... extraordinarily vivid dreams, mostly nightmares, but also lucid like yours.
BTW, try to careful with the Nyquil, my brother actually was addicted to the stuff in his teens. Majorly bad withdrawl. (Weird, eh?) |

I've heard that Nyquil has codeine in it. But that may be an urban legend. Anyway, it's powerful stuff. |

Not that I'd know or nothin' 😉 But...
Nyquil contains Dextromethorphan (a decongestant). I have never heard of Nyquil with codeine, but hey, I live in Canada. Some cough syrups with dextro also contain codeine.
The dreaming thing is well documented.
Also, don't forget, too much dextro CAN KILL YOU. It prevents the uptake of oxygen into the blood. If you or anyone else takes that crap and starts to turn blue, hit the hospital YESTERDAY. Seriously.

Nyquil contains a good bit of alcohol. Since everyone reacts differently to different substances it could be the alcohol triggering the dreams, or a combination of the alcohol and the Dextromethorphan.
I agree with winona, be really careful about using too much of it and getting hooked. If you are taking it to help you sleep, you would be better to go out and buy you a bottle of brandy or wine and drink that. It will help you sleep and help you lower that cholesterol level. (Yes I am still concerned about that Stephen!) |

Oh and on the wine and brandy, drink only small amounts. One shot of brandy or one small glass of wine, NOT the whole bottle!!! |

Not sure if there is a difference between Canadian and American either. The one my brother was using was the Canadian version... (I live in the US now but grew up in Canada)
When he quit he went through DTs almost, didn't sleep for 5+ days, had creepy crawlies etc. It was pretty freaky, but he was pretty determined to stop using it. (He was taking it for about a year, maybe two - my memory fails me as this was somewhere around 1984, maybe 1985.) |

Wine and brandy can relax you, but the sugar in them will metabolize and cause a very restless, light sleep, if you do get to sleep. At least, that's what happens to me. So I try to avoid drinking alcohol within two hours of going to bed (unless it's one of those nights where having a few drinks is a higher priority than getting a good night's sleep).
I think warm milk is the best soporific. Or just take an over-the-counter sleeping pill. |

You're right, Alex. Isn't there sugar in Nyquil? I can't remember. He could be reacting to that.
One problem with over-the-counter sleeping pills is that they can become habit forming as well. Milk or even chamomile tea would be better. |

Well, I know it's not the alcohol, I used to down a 12 pack 3 times a week. I stoped drinking like that. Maybe 1 or 2 beers a week now, trying to lower tryglicerides. I am likeing the Nyquil a little to much now, I better just stop. |

I was ill about a month ago started taking Nyquil to help me sleep
There's a good amount of alcohol in it and I was regretful when I decided I was well enough to kip without it.
But enough about me (ego trip over)
Have you been taking anything with B6 in it. This is known for causing strong lucid dreams and if you've been ill your diet might have changed to include more of it. |

Is there a specific reason you've been taking Nyquil, or is it just...um...recreational? In general, it's a really, really good idea not to take drugs you absolutely don't NEED. I'm not saying you should suffer with a life-threatening condition or debilitating pain or anything, but if you can possibly deal with a bit of minor pain/discomfort without resorting to medication, it's usually best to do so. We don't know the long-term effects of many drugs. Aspirin for children and thalidomide for pregnant women were once thought to be perfectly safe, and just look at all the recent scandals about drug safety issues. Better safe than sorry, no? |

What exactly is Nyquil? We don't get in in Australia. Does it just help you sleep or is it a pain reliever too?
You guys are such a bottomless well of information, I might stop going to the doctors and just ask you guys for advice.
By the way Alex, can I get a doctors note!?!

...lots of chemicals can change the dream/wake state of a person. That's why some people can stay awake w/ a caffeinated beverage (like coffee) & other's can't.
Using any drug for reasons other than recommended has got to screw you up a little. If you take Nyquil because of your nighttime sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, & fever then fine...that's what it's going to help. When those symptoms aren't present to be helped the chemical's job is pretty much useless & roams about your body wreaking havoc with it's normal functions.
Stop use and ask a doctor if:
you get nervous, dizzy, or sleepless.
Also, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, Stephen, you should probably consult with your doctor before having taken this! |

I didn't, I only take this stuff to go to sleep. I was taking the NQ because of bad sinus problems and allergies. I took the tylenol PM cause I recieved a pinched nerve in my neck yesterday. I'm not abusing the stuff. I did like the NQ a little too much, so I quit taking it a couple of days ago so I wouldn't get an addiction. |

Actually, I've had hallucinations just from taking half of a regular dose of nyquil. I'm actually allergic to alcohol (yes it's possible and yes it does suck terribly) and the high amount of alcohol combined with other drugs in nyquil has horrible effects on me. It's the only time in my life I have ever had a true nightmare and a hullucination, and it was the last time I will ever go near nyquil. |

Googling alcohol antihistamine tells us "Some antihistamines cause drowsiness which can be increased by alcohol." (Can't link to the page, it says you have to log in, but it's the first result.)
We are told on this page
http://www.umm.edu/patiented/articles/how_antihistamines_used_allergic_rhinitis_000077_10.htm
about taking antihistamines that one should "Avoid alcohol and tranquilizers, which increase drowsiness."
Interestingly, quite a few of the results have to do with a study that says antihistamines impair one's driving more severely than alcohol does.
The Internet isn't a great place to get your medical advice, of course, but what I gleaned from all that is that alcohol + antihistamines probably isn't going to kill you, but it's still not a great idea, either.
On the other hand, this page looks fairly ominous:

If you're taking NyQuil when you're not sick, STOP. If you find yourself looking for symptoms and rationalizing the use of Nyquil to yourself, then LAY OFF. There's no reason why anyone should get 'hooked' on over the counter cold medicine... Seriously, how low can you go? 😉
If it's difficulty sleeping that's making you reach for the Nyquil, here's a much healthier, more enjoyable, and more effective cure.
Marijuana.
Smoke just enough to get a buzz on, not enough for a full-out stone, and within 30 minutes you'll be sleeping like the dead. Besides, weed is much safer than a cocktail mix of words you can't spell, much less pronounce (unless you live in the US, then there's the danger of being thrown in jail for some harmless toking... Go figure, you can get physically addicted to legal Nyquil, but not to illegal ganja...) |

From what I've heard, the makers of Nyquil have removed one of the active ingredients from it, because it was being used to make methamphetamines. So it's no longer as effective as it used to be. |

soooooo there is much talk of nyquil, (to quote my canadian friends) eh??? basically don't take it w/ any other substance (except smoking weed) and u will be fine. if you are experiencing sweet ass lucid dreams then go w/ it, it might be your key to awareness 21st century style. obviously if you live within the u.s. you can get help for whatever is (actually) ailing you. don't blame it on the gloriousness that is nyquil. |

yo i had some sleep issues so the dr. prescribed me antihistamine pills which is the same thing thats in nyquil minus the other shit. Its just supposed to make u drowsy and it does, but just like nyquil you get very scary dreams and I do not like it. Also I feel groggy and hard to get up in the morning. Same with tylenol PM. Alcohol will help you sleep normally (and probably not dream), but the antihistamine is what is causing you to lucid dream. Good luck.... |

The makers of Nyquil do have a product on the shelf that does not contain one or more of the active ingredients, but in some stores they still sell the "fully loaded" version. Whoever says Nyquil is not addictive is actually quite nuts, or contains more self-control than any person I care to meet.
I have been taking Nyquil almost religiously for approximately 6 years, maybe longer. I have serious concerns about what it is doing to my liver and other organs. I canNOT fall asleep without it. I lie awake hours on end and do not enjoy any R.E.M. sleep whatsoever. I feel this is a serious addiction, however, I do not feel that I can sleep without the aid of it. I have tried Tylenol PM and it does nothing for me, unless I have a Nyquil chaser.
For God's sake, it comes with its own shot glass!
I have a problem. How do I know it's a problem? Well, besides the fact that I said I"ve taken it religiously for 6 years? It's obvious to me that I have a problem because I'm embarrassed to tell my friends I take it every night. |

I can't believe that you guys are taking this stuff for the high!!! That is so scary! I have a friend who died last year due to this addiction. He was using Robitusin (don't think I spelled that right, sorry ) on a daily basis. Seriously lay off or you will KILL yourself. Stay on the Mary Jane and away from the man made dope, it's so dirty. I mean if you are really sick and need some cough syrup I mean go ahead but to do this as a recreational drug you must be absolutley nuts. Where I am from these people are the real junkies. |

I asked a friend if Ambien was addictive. Her answer, Getting a full nights sleep is addictive. I know the feeling.
As I get older sleep gets both more necessary and elusive. Pot rips out my throat, leaves me hung over, paranoid, is against the law and some times wakes me up. It does nothing for my allergies. I don't drink or do drugs, This is my addiction of choice. You can get it with out the Ibuprofen. My little 10% alcohol in a shot glass hardly constitutes a drinking problem.
I am getting over a cold and see no reason to give up Nyquil and sleep.
Health insurance is unaffordable for me so spare me the "go to the doctors" comments. The way I see it, If I am taking Nyquil I am working. If I am working I am making money. If I can make enough money I can get health insurance. When I do I will go to the doctor to talk about my sleep problem and you know what he is going to tell me? Try a little antihistamine at night. If that doesn't work we will put you on some thing scary like Ambien that makes you sleep walk, sleep drive and sleep eat.
I am a little defensive because for the first time in years I don't feel like a zombie. I am able to fearlessly use my power tools and drive with my eyes open. Today my friends told me it is unhealthy to have a swig of Nyquil at night. Like crashing my car or cutting off my thumb is good for my health.........
Personally, If I am going to have one addiction in life, this is going to be the one.
And I have always had weird dreams. |

uh.. I'm 15 years old and I have recently started taking 2 tbsp once a night. I haven't had any bad dreams that I remember or any sign that any problems are occurring. I'm nervous as to whether it's addictive or not, and if so then I'm going to stop. As for now I want a good nights sleep. I used to smoke weed, but it's not worth it at all. And I have no idea why you people would suggest that as a sleeping substance. But hey.. whatever works for you, right?
All I want to know is if anyone has proof that it is addictive or is not addictive.

I'm glad I actually found an open forum where there's a relatively new post. Well, if you think about it, anything can be addicting, just some things more than others. Particularly it's those things that do something very good or pleasurable for you that become addicting. As such, NyQuil could become just as addictive as any drug. I've had something like strep or flu for the past week. I took two shots of NyQuil a night for half the week, and DayQuil throughout the day, as well as painkillers. (that's what I needed... the reason I got sick in the first place was alcohol poisoning from 30 shots of vodka at the beginning of the week. I don't usually drink...). Let's just say it REALLY helped, and I wanted to keep taking it, but I didn't. I knew I could get dependent on it after awhile, plus I didn't want to have to buy more after it ran out or when I got sick again.
So hopefully that's helpful. I was pretty high one of those days on the DayQuil.. lol (NyQuil is like pot and PCP with too much, while DayQuil is like speed.) Now I'm tempted to take more. lol |
