Big Foot High School

Status: Real
I know of many high schools named after Washington, Lincoln, or other famous characters from U.S. history, but as far as I'm aware, there's only one Big Foot High School. It's located in Walworth, Wisconsin. However, it's not named after the Bigfoot monster. Instead, it's named after an Indian Chief:

Big Foot Union High School is named after the Potawatomi Indian Chief Big Foot who lived along the banks of Geneva Lake until his tribe was relocated by the United States government in 1836. In fact, Geneva Lake was originally known as Big Foot Lake until a New York surveyor, John Brink, renamed it.

I can't find any reference to the Bigfoot monster on the school's website. I'm betting they try to downplay that connection. Still, it would be pretty cool to tell people you go to Bigfoot High.

Bigfoot High would be cool. I pity some of the students near me, in the town of Assabet.

What are their school sport teams called? The Sasquatches? I wonder if the kids get teased for going to Big Foot High. I know I get teased and called Big Foot due to the fact that I have large feet. size 10-11.

As a former student of Big Foot I would like to thank you for the kind words. However, telling people that you went to Big Foot is not as cool as you might think... With a graduating class of around 90 and a total school population of about 500, we seem to be somewhat of a joke! And our sports teams are called the Chiefs... for those that were wondering! Thanks

My graduating class was around 60. So you're not the smallest school around.

Bigfoot High, I can't understand why your team mascot ISN'T Sasquatch.
What a wasted opportunity!

Woah -- that's freaky. My mom and her siblings went to Big Foot High in the 60s, and this is the only time I've ever seen it referenced in The Outside World.

Hi, I'm Kelly. I actually graduated from Big Foot High School last year and although the name may sound odd to outsiders, it's not thought of as anything unusual for the locals. The entire area is very historical and has many Native America references, so our name is nothing out of the ususal. We actually have a statue of Chief Big Foot outside the entrance of the school, so there is obvisouly no confusion. Our team name is the Chiefs, but because of the policical correctness, we can not use a mascot of an indian chief for several reasons, however this is slowly gaining studen support to be changed. Any other question? email me. And I'd be interested to see if there actually is a high school named after a monster. I highly doubt it.

I go to big foot and its not that bad. there is an indian statue out front and a totem pole inside(which looks like a monster) so I hope that satisfies your monster fetish. Oh and our team is the cheifs.

I went to BFHS in the 60s. Growing up around there I never thought much about the name. I still don't. It seems perfectly normal to me, that is until I say something about it to any of the 6.6 billion people who didn't grow up around there. As soon as it leaves my mouth, I realize that its a bit odd. But I'm proud of it. How boring it must be to tell people you went to "Central High School".

BFHS alum, when exactly did you go to Bigfoot?

Did you know Peggy, Nora, Bill or Joanne of the Lamar clan?

I go to big foot and to tell you the truth i never even considered the name wierd. There's so many things around here named after the famous indian tribe, that it's just normal for the school to be named after it too.

I also went to Big Foot High School (in the early 1980's) and did think about the name being odd -- especially since my grade school was Reek Elementary ("Reek" and "Big Foot", nice huh?)

I went to Big Foot and am proud of the name.
There are people who want us to change it. The Janesville Gazette just had an article about it.
People need to stand up and say NO. Everything anyone says will offend someone, That's life, but unless they can prove that we have use this in an offensive way LEAVE IT ALONE.
We have soldiers over seas dying for us, drug problems in our schools, and more dangerous things going on around us and we are going to be petty about a name. I think we need to get our priorities in order.

I am a freshmen and our class is the largest ever for the school 120. It isn't really that odd going to BIG FOOT. other schools have dumber names lie the Crimson Tide.

I am going to be a freshman at Big Foot High School next year and I am looking forward to it. Well ,I agree that we have much bigger problems going on in our school right now, then to be worrying about a logo, which should not be offensive to anyone. We are honoring chief Big Foot ,and I don't see why that's a problem? What should we be called then, the Tomahawks? Why is this logo thing such a big deal!WE ARE THE BIG FOOT CHIEFS, AND THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE!

I went to Big Foot Hish School in the 1990's and have recently met someone who graduated more recently. The school has gotten much more politically correct over the years. For instance, we had a generic Native American head on several things such as our year books, we had homecoming floats that depicted spears, peace pipes, and lots of feathers, it was also very common to see students wearing headdresses and war paint at sporting events. Times have changed, and homecoming floats are much different. I think the statue in front of the school is much better, and a tribute to the history of the area. It is not as offensive as some of the things of the past.

What up Bigfoot people? I graduated from Bigfoot last year. I just happend to be wandering around the web and found this dealing my old High School, crazy, crazy, crazy.... Hmmm... Sasquatch? That would be a terrible name for the teams. The Chiefs is def. awesome. Unfortuanately the named was changed from the BigFoot Chiefs to just BigFoot. Thanks to a bad decision that was made by the school because of complaints. I felt this was a terrible decision by the school because it was not demeaning in any manor to Native Americans, the name was meant to honor Chief Bigfoot who previously resided in the area.

I graduated from Big Foot High School in 1988. My father graduated from Big Foot in the 60's and my son will graduate this year. I am proud to be a Chieftain graduate and I agree with Kyle. The school is named in HONOR of Chief Big Foot. One of the most memorable days in my school education was the day we learned about Chief Big Foot and history of the area we live. People need to stop being overly sensitive and be proud of their history and ethnicity. I feel sorry for those who can not see the honor of our history and their own ethnicity. I am proud of mine.
