World Record for Smoking

image True or False: Did Stefan Sigmond of Transylvania gain the world record for smoking by smoking 800 cigarettes in less than six minutes? If I hadn't seen the picture I wouldn't have believed it was possible, but apparently it is true, although I'm a bit wary about whether using this 'special wheel-like device' should really count. It doesn't seem like you would be fully smoking all the cigarettes. Anyway, I hate smoking, but I'd love to see someone whip out a device like this at a bar and start puffing away. gosh hairy who knew you'd be first...its fascinating I'm a light smoker it would kill you any doctors out there?

If this qualifies as smoking (despite the cigs not actually being in his mouth), the world record for smoking was probably set during a fire in a tobacco warehouse somewhere.
For smoking stuff other than tobacco, I might be a contender, since I was in central Alaska last summer during the largest forest fire on record, and couldn't help inhaling several tons of the local flora.

I inhaled tons of that Alaskan flora myself, years ago... world record

World records are governed by strict rules - if the Guiness (sp?) people are involved. Check out their website for details. As far as smoking these cigarettes, I think that if this guy inhales or at least puffs the smoke into his mouth, it counts. However, isn't there a better way to become famous? Like being related to a fictional movie character perhaps?
Posted by Christopher Cole  on  Wed Mar 02, 2005  at  05:11 PM
Good point Christopher Cole, but I would assume one would have to smoke the entire cigarette, formed as a cigarette, to hold a cigarette record.

I heard Guiness have changed it's criteria in order to be in the book, and things like smoking and gluttony have been banned to avoid encourging these behaviours. =D Whew good, we don't know more people getting lung cancer here! XD
Posted by Mika  on  Wed Mar 02, 2005  at  09:29 PM
i think one puff of that is instant lung cancer.
does that guy smoke a crate a day?
Posted by MrKurto  on  Wed Mar 02, 2005  at  10:15 PM
Even heavy smokers (one or more packs of cigarettes every day)heave a lung cancer mortality "only" 15 to 25 times higher than male nonsmokers. And only 1-2% of all smokers have lung cancer. Yes, by smoking every day you bet your life against pleasure but odds are 1 to 50-100. Few puffs of 800 cigaretts might give you "instant" cancer with chance of 1 to 200-400.

'Guiness have changed it's criteria...and things like smoking and gluttony have been banned to avoid encourging these behaviours.'
Wow, another example of what PC times we live in! I guess competive eaters are unaware of the new anti-gluttony clause because we now have 'competive eating' qualifying as a sport!
And I'm all for gluttony, but how GROSS is competitive eating?! I worked @ a film festival last year where this movie 'Zen & the Art of Competitive Eating' premired. The star of the movie would show up at parties and other screenings as if he was a bonafide celebrity. He was a nice person but I just couldn't distance myself from the fact that he does stuff like inhale dozens of hardboiled eggs in a matter of minutes. Seeing him just made me want to projectile vomit.
Posted by Electra  on  Thu Mar 03, 2005  at  10:36 AM
The world champion of competitive eating right now is a slender, fairly small, somewhat delicate-looking woman.
That doesn't really make it any less disgusting, but somehow it makes it a bit more bizarre.

Several decades ago, well three at least, Guiness banned such stunts as laying in a bathtub covered in ice for safety reasons. This sort of stunt should have been banned back then. I wonder how long the cigarettes stayed alight, those in the middle would have trouble getting oxygen. Maybe they only had to stay alight for a certain number of seconds to qualify, with that get-up I doubt he could smoke them all to the end.

I'm wondering where you're getting those statistics, because they sound like pure baloney.

I also notice that those stats only cover lung cancer. Smoking can also cause heart disease, mouth cancer, and throat cancer, as well as contributing to more or less every other kind of possible cancer, since tobacco is full of carcinogens. How many people die of those instead? Lung cancer isn't the only problem smoking causes that can kill you, in other words.

Isn't it amazing that people have to be *told* that inhaling smoke is bad for you? Even back before warning labels were mandatory, you'd think people would have had a clue.

Christopher Cole sez:

Hey, Guinness banning something doesn't mean you can't do it. It just means the Guinness people won't put it in their book.
Another one of those psychology dissertations in search of a grad student would be why anybody would want to be the world record holder for some monumentally stupid behavior.

Who cares.

Things Guiness has also banned: swallowing sharp metal objects, breaking rocks with your bare hands, walking on coals barefoot, pulling weights with your teeth, records for heavy body peircings (ie: 200-lb. weight nipple peircings), staying in below-zero weather stark naked, and lots of other things that are likely to kill you. Trust me, I have a LOT of the old books (1971-1995)...they had records for these things.

Okay, there is NO WAY this guy actually inhaled AT ALL. The ld50 for nicotine (Lethal dose in 50% of patients), as far as I could determine from the Net, is about 1 mg/kg for humans. I wonder about this, because fo rats it's listed at around 50mg/kg. So I'll use the higher number.

800 Cigs * 2 mg/cig (arbitrary, the site I'm using, http://www.nicotrol.com/patch/index.asp , lists 1-3 mg per cig)
=1600 mg
Lets say there are 25 drags on a cigarette.
1600/25=
64 mg of nicotine per drag.

So, even if this guy were to take ONE DRAG off of this AND INHALE, he'd propbably hit the ground pretty damned quick. The symptoms of nicotine poisoning are here: http://www.umm.edu/ency/article/002510sym.htm

question for you.. is there a world record for how many cigaretts can be put in a humans mouth and smoked??

I'm sure there must be. If not, go for it.

Search for the Guiness Book of World Records, they are online. If there is a world record, they probably have it posted. I looked at it a while back to see about the world record for a beard. The present record is 17.5 feet held by a guy from Kansas who died in the '30s. The longest present beard is worn by a guy in India whose beard is about 6 feet, much longer than mine, and he's younger so I'll never catch up. Killed that idea for getting into the Book.
Posted by Christopher Cole  on  Fri Aug 05, 2005  at  02:40 PM
It isn't on the site. I remembered that I had to look something up for work (I can't remember what) and I came across this in the FAQ:

Why is my record not on the website?"

There are more than 30,000 record categories in our database, and only a proportion of these records can feature on the website. We currently house about 3,000 records online, but we'll be adding more every week, so make sure to check the site regularly.

Well Boo in The Land of Haggii, you've probably checked it more recently than I have. And your comment triggered a memory from even further back. Someone set the record for being in a tub covered in ice. Guiness accepted the record but said they would not print it in the book, and I presume post on the website, since the new policy was not to print dangerous stunts so as not to encourage behavior that could lead to serious injury or death. I will presume smoking would fall into that prohibition.
Posted by Christopher Cole  on  Fri Aug 05, 2005  at  07:43 PM
does it make a difference how many there are lit? If he takes a drag he's still taking the same amount of smoke in as if he were only smoking one cigarette... Unless he can inhale a hot air balloon, most of the tobacco will just burn up and fall to the ground as ash.
Posted by kat  on  Sun Sep 11, 2005  at  03:06 PM
Another vote for it being safe for him to inhale. Yes, to take one drag on all those cigarettes would probably be deadly but it wouldn't be possible for him to do so. While I would think he would get more from this contraption than from a single cigarette he's not going to get anything like 800x as much as he simply won't be drawing that much air from any one cigarette. The only reason he will get any more than with one cigarette is that the air being drawn in will be from the smoke-filled area in front of the cigarettes rather than the basically pure air normally drawn into the cigarette.

I have smoked for a number of years and I can tell you that the device is certainly not capable of being air tight around the cigarettes. Some, if not most of, the smoke would be lost. As far as "Liz" is concerned, if you believe all smokers should die, and actually wish for it, did you not also wish for your father to die? Or did you just mean the smokers you do not know or are related to? Just keep talking on your brain tumor inducing phone to and try to keep living your "low-risk" life. Eat right, exercise, and die on your toilet of a stroke. As far as the lungs in the textbooks kids read now, is the owner of the pink "healthy" lung any less dead? I sincerely hope your father will never see this post...

My 73-year-old father smokes 5 cartons, (1,000 cigarettes) per week. Does anyone know if this qualifies as a world record?

It is not possible! 800 cigarettes in less than six minutes - fake! The volume of lungs can't deliver all smoke!

This guy is a real hard-working one, but not sure whether he could become a world record holder in running
