Phony Seal Hunt

The latest nugget of fake news from the world of journalism concerns a seal hunt that never took place. A Boston Globe writer, Barbara Stewart, described the slaughter of baby seals off the coast of Newfoundland in great detail. What she didn't know was that the hunt had been delayed, and so hadn't begun yet. Oops.

Only because they're cute does anyone give a damn. Why don't these protestors care about the millions of rats or bugs that are killed every year JUST for our convenience. At least using the fur provides some use... LOTS of jobs (seal hunter, mariners, fur makers, fur dealers) and income to people who might otherwise not have it. People who have too much money are always going to blow it on "stuff they can really live without" so why not let them make money from it. As long as it's managed properly to avoid over-hunting then "Who are you to judge how someone else lives?" Republicans...

Actually, I think the issue presented is not whether the hunt is good or bad, nor is it about "Republicans" (however much some writers are unable to contain their polemics). It is about the credibility, gullibility and work ethics of journalists. There are a few different problems at work here: journalists who are too lazy to get a story so they make one up; journalists who are too lazy to get a story so they simply reprint press releases issued by others (with a changed word or two as their only contribution); and journalists who want to push a particular view or agenda and who therefore make up "facts" or slant the facts to fit their interests. All, of course, presenting fertile ground for hoax. Not that all journalists fall into the categories, but the problem is pervasive enough to give rational people genuine concern.

By the way Mark-N-Jen I don't imagine you'll find many Republicans among the PETA crowd opposed to seal hunting.

Not to mention that there seems to sometimes be more uproar about things like seal or whale hunts than the human hunts that have happened in Rwanda, Sudan, Cambodia, wherever. 800,000 people killed in 100 days? Few people even flinched.

And what about animal-animal murder; I've seen cats wilfully slaughter defenceless mice for no more reason than that it pleased them to do so. I've seen rabbits, dead at the teeth of dogs. Birds pecking at insects, at worms - earlier today, I saw a crow waddling off with its beak stuffed with worms. It had no shame, no self-consciousness. I see on the television that leopards and cheetahs regularly hunt down zebras and caribou; you may argue that they do so in order to live, but this is clearly nonsense. Cats of all sizes can digest a wide range of foodstuffs, and it is only spite and anger that maintains this evil slaughter. I say muzzle the predators; or, if they are unwilling to be muzzled, they must PAY.

Sam,

My apologies for making light of something. However, not all of us you'll find here take EVERY little thing with the utmost of seriousness. That entire rambling was because I was BORED. I am by degree a biologist and a self proclaimed nature lover, however, sometimes things are taken TOO far! Like bitching about every little hunt, or as you stated, faked journalism. But BOTH (hunting & lies) have been around FOREVER and always will be... so what's the point in worrying and fretting over it when NO AMOUNT of effort or energy will EVER end either one? It's a waste of precious time...

As for the whole Replublicans line, don't feel offended. It was only placed there for it's flammability. 😊 I equally abhore Democrats so at least there's no favoritism to complain about. It was merely intended as a jibe at the way that particular party seems to think government regulation is the answer to every problem. They want to control every aspect of the lives of their constituents based on what THEY think is best... which is bullshit! The party may not have been founded on those priciples, may not have begun that way, but that is definately the direction politics have gone recently. For this, I used them in order to try and stir up some action... they'll get over it.

PS - Ashley, you just crack me up! I don't think I've ever failed to either "see your point" or "laugh my ass off" depending on what you were attempting to say or do. You must be really fun to know in real life...

Remember Mark, you have a woman.

Believe me Steve, she (Jen) NEVER lets me forget that... not even for a minute.

However, having not researched it at all, I ask this. How do you 'know' that Ashley is a woman? Assuming as much just from a name can sometimes get you into trouble. I've known guys named Ashley, Kim, and Michelle.

And I'm not hitting on her... I merely stated that she seems like a "cool chick." Hitting on and complimenting are not the same thing and is a common mistake of todays' youth.

😉

As far as Stephen is concerned acknowledging a woman's existence is tantamount to flirting. If she acknowledges him then that means she wants to sleep with him.

Yeah, I've kind of figured that out about him already. Kind of makes you miss your days of youth huh? But mostly just makes me laugh...

Kids these days...

I've sometimes thought that we should just club the reporters. I haven't quite worked out the financial benefits of doing that, though; I doubt that reporter-skin coats would be a big seller. Maybe I could market some "Save the Reporter" calendars, with pictures of reporters posing on Arctic ice floes.
