Objective Ministries

A visitor asks: http://crossspot.net/objective/kidz.html
is this site for real,or just mocking christian web sites?
My answer: My vote is that it's satire, though it's pretty hard to tell. To my jaded sensibility the site definitely has a tongue-in-cheek feel to it. For instance the proposed redesign of the American flag to include the word 'GOD' stamped in huge letters across the top of it seems a little much. But there are people who go for that kind of stuff. What confuses me are the banner ads on the site which appear to lead to genuine Christian businesses. But maybe the ads are put there just to give the site a façade of authenticity.

I think that it is a real thing, if you look at the stuff their selling I think that kind of proves it, but it is really hard to tell. It freaks me out that there are people that are so blind to evolution...

I was wondering the same exact thing. That's why I searched for it. This was the first thing that came up. I think if it is satire, it's well done. At least if what they were shooting for was ambiguity.

That URL doesn't work anymore, but their store says they moved to here:

It's definitely satirical--They have pictures supposedly sent in by children (some of whom are as old as 19) but all are clearly computer drawn and include pictures of Jesus on a dinosaur. There is no fellowship university, (FU?) and if you'd noticed, there is a lot of suggestive references ("I'm hot for Jesus" "Jesus is the light--Turn him on.") But if you still think it's real then read the interview with the christian rappers.

It's a parody site - check out the wikipedia entry for it.

I was fooled for a while myself though. It's truly a brilliant parody - it's so extensive, and yet it never goes so over the top to give itself away. The fact that they run ads to real Christian sites makes it all the more convincing. But what raised my initial suspicion was how the site has no apparent geographic setting - usually any fundie group will proudly proclaim their location.

Still, I'd love to know how many true believers (and nonbelievers for that matter) are still taken in by the site.

There are some instances that are pretty blatantly over the top. Check out the guestbook, where it asks for your religion.

I finally decided that it was, indeed, satire when I noticed that in their merchandise section, they're selling thongs labeled as "Chastity Preservers."

It is in fact satire, just really well done. It's entirely internally consistent, so you won't find out just by browsing the site--Of course excepting most of the over-the-top crazy stuff on there.

I sent these people an angry letter as I was so well fooled. I feel stupid...

It is one of the more brilliant hoaxed out there. It is designed that if you have a very cynical eye toward these things, you will see the hoax. People who really, really want to believe in that stuff will never see the hoax and will spend money to advertise on that site. That is the brilliance of it. They are making money off of believers.

What is the Internet term for the situation where you call something as satire when it is hard to tell if they are just that extreme or not?

Im a christian and for a minute i almost believed objective was a genuine site. I even posted an angry note on their site... i was horrified when i stumbled upon it at first. Very impressive parody. I complained on the objective site that there are more important battles to fight than christianity. That their are greater evils in the world than anti Christ Christians. However as a Disciple of Jesus myself i'm now thinking that this work is worth it. Reiligion is dangerous. Look at my own country Ireland, The Taliban, size 0 catwalks, the KKK. I love Jesus despite us christians best efforts to get in the way (usually unknowingly). The sad thing is that people exist who do believe a lot of what 'objective ministeries' represent. Wasn't it these same people who killed Christ in Jerusalem. Over 2000 yrs ago people turned on and killed God himself...(although i believe he rose back to life of course) So it shouldn't come as a surprise i guess that 'these' anti Christ religious people are still alive and kicking.

Again, hats off to the creators of the parody site
