Libertarian Girl Unmasked

image The Libertarian Girl blog was authored by the girl you see in the thumbnail to the right. Or so it seemed. A lot of people were suspicious. And it turned out that their suspicions were correct. Catallarchy.net discovered that the picture of the girl had been lifted from a russian mail-order bride site. The real author of Libertarian Girl was quick to confess to being a fake, though he's still not revealing his true identity. But he has posted his thoughts about what it was like being a faux-girl blogger:

One thing I learned from this blog is how easy attractive woman have it. When I had a blog as my real self, no one linked to me, no one left any comments, it was as if the blog existed in a vacuum. But things were different for Libertarian Girl. Every day I'd check Technorati and discover new unsolicited links. It was like I had warped into an alternate universe where all the rules had changed. At the rate things were happening, this would have been an A-list blog in a few more months.

To be honest, from what he wrote, he doesn't sound that nice. Or is it all tongue in cheek and I'm not getting it?

If no one visited his website before, how did anyone know about the picture? Or am I missing something here? And there is scientific research showing that attractive people do receive better treatment/jobs/etc. Both attractive men and attractive women.

You mean, a right-wing pundit is a liar and a misogynist? I'm shocked, shocked!

Barghest, Libertarians are not, repeat NOT, right-wingers. In fact, one of the primary points of Libertarianism is a rejection of the left-wing vs right-wing simplistic crap. I might suggest you visit http://www.theadvocates.org and take The World's Smallest Political Quiz and look at some of the material there so that you will know what you are talking about.

Christopher,

I took that quiz and it called me a liberal, which I think is wrong. I think the test has more to do with the test writers idea of what constitutes "liberal" and "conservative" than reality.

For example, the question about cutting taxes and government spending by 50% is pretty preposterous. Cutting government spending by that much would make a train wreck of our economy if it were done in a short period. Since the question makes no mention of the time to implement this, the answer is a meaningless measure.

The "corporate welfare" question is also a bit loaded. What constitutes "welfare"? A defense contract? A government granted monoply (as utilities are operated)?

It's an interesting test, but more for entertainment value than anything else.

The test is a test of basic beliefs, not detailed operation, which is how it remains so short. It is also slanted to define people as Libertarians as a means of increasing the number of people who difine themselves as Libertarians so that they would probably vote Libertarian. My point was that calling Libertarians right-wingers is not accurate. The test does show that instead of the simplistic straight line, political philosophy is much more complex. I also wished to point out that Libertarianism is often misunderstood and deserves knowledgeable comments.

Libertarian = A Republican who likes drugs and pornography.

Big Gary C, your comment sounds like something from some Democrat website. How would you like it if you were described by an opponent and that description was widely accepted. We are off subject here, but I have read the various Libertarian positions, on both the national and local party websites, and my understanding of the Libertarian position on the two "major" parties is that they rape the Constitution equally, just in different places. Given the Libertarian attacks on the Republican party, it is unlikely that describing Libertarians as Republicans who like drugs and pornography is about as untrue as saying that Big Gary C is a pen name for W.E. Dubois.

I do know what I'm talking about.

Libertarians are both conservative and right-wing.

You're wrong.

How's that for short and simple?
Posted by Barghest  on  Fri Feb 18, 2005  at  07:30 PM
Okay, let me get this straight: you claim Libertarians aren't conservative, and to prove it, you put up a totally bullshit test whose clumsy and obvious intent is to manipulate people into thinking they are Libertarian when they're not, because the ideology is so overbroadly defined.

So to prove that Libertarians aren't conservative, you want me to go take a test so they can lie to me in order to gain a political advantage by exploiting me.

They lie, they manipulate, they exploit, they conceal their true motives and beliefs--Libertarians sound like textbook conservatives to me.

The test is based upon a political theory that has been around for a few decades, instead of a single line to determine your political position you use two scales. One scale is economic liberty or regulation and the other is personal liberty or regulation. The test asks questions designed to increase the desired responce, much like most sponsored surveys. Libertarians take the position of a large portion of personal and economic liberty. And from personal experience Barghest, the sort of people you describe can be found in more philosophies than just political conservatism. Phonies, con artists, and crooks abound in both "major" parties, Richard Nixon and his equally famous fellow LBJ would classify as "conservatives" under your definition but both could classify as liberals under the definition of increasing the government control of our lives, a definition often used nowadays. It was often said that LBJ never honestly won an election in his life, and he did fraudulantly take military medals during WW II. Using the political definitions found on the Advocates for Self Government site, taken from non-Libertarian books published decades ago as I remember, liberals work for government control of our economic lives and conservatives work for government control of our social lives. Libertarians work for less government control of both aspects of our lives. You might consider investigating all sides of an issue instead of just mouthing off the bias of one side.

Christopher, how did you know I'm really W.E.B. Dubois?
I faked my death back in 1963 and went underground. Now I'm 136 years old, and loving every minute of it.
