Hitler Draws Disney

First there was the Hitler Diary hoax. Now we may be witnessing the Hitler Disney hoax.



William Hakvaag, director of a Norwegian war museum, claims to have found sketches (shown above) of various Disney characters drawn by Adolf Hitler. He says that he found the paintings hidden inside another painting signed "A. Hitler" that he bought at an auction. Hakvaag feels 100% confident that the drawings are authentic Hitlers. The Telegraph reports:

Mr Hakvaag, who said he had performed tests on the paintings which suggested that they dated from 1940, said: "I am 100 per cent sure that these are drawings by Hitler. If one wanted to make a forgery, one would never hide it in the back of a picture, where it might never be discovered." The initials on the sketches, and the signature on the painting, matched other copies of Hitler's handwriting, he claimed.
"Hitler had a copy of Snow White," he said. "He thought this was one of the best movies ever made."

If these are genuine, I assume they'll be worth a lot of money, since they'll appeal to collectors of both Disney and Nazi memorabilia. What a combination! But I'm very skeptical that they're genuine. The Nazi memorabilia market is notorious for being flooded with fakes. And even when Hitler was alive, forgers were creating fake works of art attributed to him. (Thanks, EBE)

I can see that Hitler might have considered Snow White to be Aryan, but wouldn't the Seven Dwarves be inferior according to Nazi genetic theories?

I think that Eco's Foucault's Pendulum refers to various Aryan intellectuals who claim that the Seven Dwarves were representations or references to the Nibelung, or something... Not sure if that was a genuine statement of fact or just a joke, though (Outeast's Maxim: There is no imaginable claim, no matter how ludicrous, that is not being made in all earnestness by someone somewhere.) And I'm not sure where Pinocchio would fit into Aryan mythology, either.

It sounds like a ludicrous combination, Hitler and Disney, but it wouldn't surprise me if Hitler had sketched out some Disney characters in his spare time. He liked the film immensely. Along with King Kong and whistling "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?"

As an artist, Hitler was notoriously bad at drawing people, usually leaving out of the cityscapes that made up most of his work. I suspect some frustrated Disney wannabe added the signature as a private joke.

I agree with Phred22, Hitler could draw and draw well but he was good at drawing architeetural pictures only. And, yes, it is well documented that he loved Disney films.
