A teacher joked with his class that 'Get Naked Day' was going to be celebrated in his classroom. Students would get extra credit for participating. What he meant by this was that students were supposed to wear flipflops to an upcoming class so that they could easily slip them off to practice writing with their feet (they were going to be watching the movie 'My Left Foot'). But he thought students would find it funnier if he referred to flipflop day as 'Get Naked Day'. Some people are making a big fuss about this, saying the comment was too sexually suggestive. I'm not quite seeing that. Seems like a pretty harmless thing to me (unless he makes jokes like this all the time). What disturbs me more is the image of this old teacher trying to be hip and cool and funny, when you know all the kids are rolling their eyes and laughing at him, not with him. Kids can be so cruel.

I tried to encourage a 'Get naked day'
No one went for it though :(
No matter what they guy said, they would have heard "naked", every other word, in every sentence the guy said.
Why these people think that kids need to have "naked" brought to their attention to think about it...please...and how long had junior been in that shower, Mom?
You mean, he suggested they try writing with their feet?
Or he suggested they all come to class naked?
If the latter, I guess it was his last week of teaching there. Unless Kentucky has developed a lot more of a sense of humor since the last time I was there.
"Mitchell said he was "honked" to hear that Burt had used such a sexually suggestive motivational tool in his class but believed that the reprimand was punishment enough."
he was "honked" to hear?? what the hell is that suppose to mean??
They keep quoting some stupid kid who keeps saying that the teacher made sexual comments all the time in class. How much do you want to bet that that is bullshit.
For example, at my senior year in high school we had a little problem with one of the school's vice principals doing thong-checks at a school dance. She only checked a few girl's, but then it seemed every girl at school (including ones who didn't even attend the dance) were claiming they were checked too, as well as had their bra's checked, etc. People make outragous claims to get media attention.
In another instance, we had another incident in my high school band my junior year with our band director strangling a baritone player for wearing orange socks to the rose parade. That kid then bragged about it, and sued the band director. Thing is, he was getting a bad grade and hated band and wanted to do something to piss off the director enough for him to do something stupid and get in trouble. It worked. Granted, the director should have been thinking more instead of just getting angry, but the fact is, just as you say Alex, "kids can be so cruel."
How much do you want to bet that the kids in the article got the joke but went home and complained to their parents anyways just to get back at the teacher for their low grades.
"...For example, at my senior year in high school we had a little problem with one of the school's vice principals doing thong-checks at a school dance."
... uh ... What, exactly, was she checking for?
