Be A Celeb

Fake blogs are a growing trend on the web. Just recently we saw Plain Layne exposed as Odin Soli. But now, with the advent of an online role-playing game called Be A Celeb, the fake-blog phenomenon seems to be rising to a whole new level. The goal of Be A Celeb is to create a convincing fake celebrity blog. You can choose to be whatever celebrity you like, as long as someone else hasn't already taken the celebrity. Celebrities already in play include Clay Aiken, Jessica Biel, and Kirsten Dunst. Once you've created your fake celebrity, you can then make them interact with other fake celebrities... kind of like a strange alternative reality Hollywood, or LiveJournal Celebrity Sims.
An article about this game has been posted on morons.org. I'm wondering if they'd let me play either Plain Layne or Kaycee Nicole Swenson as a character... though they'd probably say they don't qualify as 'celebrities.'... or what would happen if a real celebrity began playing themselves as a fake celebrity? The mind boggles.

I see these all the time on GreatestJournal when I am logging onto the kinds of RPs that I play (mostly random supernatural and anime). I always found them and their rules to be disturbing. "We are slash friendly!" "If you have sexual content, warn us!" (Slash = homosexual relationships. I have no qualms with playing out homosexual relationships and I've done it myself, but something about using real people who probably aren't interested in the same sex...) Wonder what the real celebs would say if they saw these. Also, another trend is using a celebrity to "play" the character you made up in an avatar (when that happens, I call it "avatar hell", because I am completely unfamiliar with most celebrities on the market these days).

I play with these things all the time. Not celebrity blogs, mostly anime characters. We do the actual role-playing on AIM, then we talk about the events in character on our livejournals so that everyone else will know what's going on. They're actually quite fun, but I don't think they would count as hoaxes? In the RP journals I'm in, we're not really trying to trick anyone into thinking that we're real people. We do it to keep the story moving along for ourselves, and if other people read it that's fine. We even have out of character notes on our entries sometimes.

It would be kind of weird RPing a real person though. I don't think I would do that...too strange.

I just remembered something like this that happened a few years back. I'm pretty sure it was the Backstreet Boys who got pissed and started "speaking out" against the LJ users who were "claiming to be them", despite the fact that normally people put up disclaimers about that sort of thing.
