Al-Gebra Terrorist — Here's an email that's been making the rounds recently:
At Heathrow Airport today, an individual, later discovered to be a public
school teacher, was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession
of a compass, a protractor, and a graphical calculator. Authorities
believe he is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement.
He is being charged with carrying weapons of math instruction.

Julia Roberts on Redbook — julia jennifer Redbook draws fire from Julia Roberts for putting a picture of her on its cover in which a recent image of her head is pasted onto an old picture of her body. Ironically, the title of their article about her is "The Real Julia." Redbook also recently got in trouble for doing the same thing to Jennifer Aniston. The problem, of course, is not in their use of composite images (everyone does that), but in doing such a poor job of them.

Ghost in a Jar — ghost in a jar If you missed the Ghost In A Jar thing on eBay, Reason Online provides a summary of it. Unfortunately the original ghost in a jar page has been pulled from eBay, though it's been archived here. But now the Ghost in a Jar has its own weblog on LiveJournal. And of course hundreds of ghost-in-a-jar imitations are now flourishing on eBay. And there's even an entire website devoted to ghost-in-a-jar stuff.

Ern Malley — The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Peter Carey is writing a novel about the Ern Malley hoax. It'll be titled My Life As A Fake. Ern Malley was the name of a poet who wowed Australia's Modernist literary establishment back in the 1940s. Trouble was, he was just a fictitious character invented as a prank by some anti-Modernists. Details here.
