Elks Pause Before a Forest Fire Two elks stand in a river as a fiery inferno rages behind them. It's an amazing scene, and an amazing photo. But is it real? The answer is yes. It's real. Even though it's one of those scenes that's so spectacular that quite a few people were convinced that it was somehow faked. The picture was taken by fire investigator John McColgan on Aug 6, 2000 in the Bitterroot Valley, Montana.
