The Mecklenburg Declaration

In 1819, 44 years after the purported event, the Raleigh Register broke the news that the citizens of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, had made a Declaration of Independence over a year before the Continental Congress had made theirs. No one challenged this claim unil 1829, when a posthumously published letter written by Thomas Jefferson dismissed the Mecklenburg Declaration as a hoax. The issue of authenticity has been disputed ever since.
