I’ve Installed A New Forum

I'VE INSTALLED A NEW FORUM. Check it out here. And feel free to start posting there (instead of here).
The new forum has a few disadvantages. For instance, non-members can't post any topics or comments in it. So it's a members-only forum. This wasn't by my design. It's just how the software is designed, and I can't figure out any workaround.
Also, current post tallies won't migrate over to the new forum. Even if you've posted 3000 messages in this forum, the new forum won't think you've posted any messages. You'll be starting back at 0. I can't figure out any way to change this.
Plus, I can't move any threads from this forum into the new forum. So it's a completely fresh start.
But you won't need to register again. If you signed up as a member in this forum, you're already a member of the new forum. (but avatars won't migrate over... you'll need to upload your avatar again).
However, here are the advantages of the new forum:
1) it puts much less of a strain on the server.
2) it has a 'fast reply' option, which should be popular.
3) it allows members to create polls.
4) it allows members to upload pictures, avatars, etc.
5) it allows me to create lots of different forums focused on different categories (like hoaxes, jokes, off-topic chit chat, etc.)
6) it has spellcheck.
And there's more stuff I can't think of.
Basically, it's a real forum, unlike this forum which is actually blogging software that I reconfigured to act as a forum.
So unless people have major problems with the new forum, in a few days I'll stop letting people create new threads in this forum. However, I'll keep all existing threads in this forum open.
I think I've ironed most of the bugs out of the new forum, so it should be ready for everyone to use (fingers crossed). If not, then we'll find that out.

It's going to take a little getting use too, but it sounds great... |

Alex,
I don't know how this will affect me - a frequent viewer, occasional poster. I haven't been able to register as a member, because according to the instructions, I have to copy a 50X50 avatar, and they're really hard to find. Closest I could find for free was a 60X80 or 90X110. But, small loss if I'm to be excluded. Most of your regular posters, here, don't seem to like me very much, anyway. Oh well, I won't lose any sleep. I'll still enjoy the MOH - you are a genius, Alex! |

Stork, you don't need an avatar to become a member. They're pretty much optional, and they're automatically resized in this forum...(you have to do the hard work yourself in the new one!) |

Hi Stork,
I hope I'm not stepping over the line answering this. Alex, smack me if I am.
Where are you clicking? If you're clicking on "How to create an avatar" down below the posting box, you're clicking in the wrong spot, but from the description you give it sounds as if you might be.
Try going up to the top of the page, and click on "Register". That should take you to a page where it will let you make up a username/screen name, enter your email and give you the terms of service etc. It shouldn't ask you for an avatar at all. I just created a test account, and it worked ok for me.
The avatar thing is optional for an account, and can only be done when you've already registered.
And for the record, I don't know about anyone else, but I certainly don't have a problem with you. Just jump right on in. 😊 |

The spell check will be a useful addition for many users. |

Cap'n,
I hate to be the voice of pessimism but those who need "spell check" the most, won't use it because they don't have a clue what it says, means, is for, or how it's used. It's kind of ironic huh?

I guess you're right. It's a waste of bandwidth. |

Stork, like Winona said, you definitely don't have to have an avatar to register as a member. All you have to have (I think) is an email address. Avatars are totally optional. |

Alex, with all due respect, the last time I registered on a forum like your new one for a website, it cost me NZ$600 on my credit card as something in the system stuck me for a scam charge.
I'd like some proof this won't happen again if I do register here. As an expert debunker, it should be easy enough for you to supply proof that this won't occur. |

It's a free site. That means that you don't have to provide a credit card number to sign up, just an email address. No card required = no fraudulent charges. Seems pretty simple. |

Charybdis, this site is dedicated the people who think like that - The gullible. The site that charged me the NZ$600 also said that none of my information would be used, but they in fact did so through my email to my PayPal account.
I could crap on a cracker and say it was peanut butter, but most people would know the truth after at least two bites.
I am waiting for conclusive proof before I take this sort of gamble. |

DF, here's an idea. If you want, I can send you a gmail invite. It's not traceable to you even through DNS etc., and you can put any name in you want, any info you want. Tell them you're from Mars. 😊 Email me through my profile if you want to, and I can set you up. |

Yeah, Mars rules...much better than that peanut butter crap-on-a-cracker thing... If you do tell them you're from Mars, mention my name...I have friends there, and you'll get better crackers |

Hairy Houdini, I suspect you knowledge of crackers is because of the takes-one-to-know-one school of thought.
I am still skeptical about the whole thing. But if Alex is willing to show good faith, then by all means I am willing to see this evidence. |
