In January 1926, 12 years before Orson Welles's infamous War of the Worlds broadcast, the BBC sparked a national panic of its own... It broadcast a 12 minute report of a murderous riot in central London, which turned out to be a spoof, masterminded by a literary Catholic priest.
Read the story (and listen to a reconstruction of the original broadcast) at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/the_riot_that_never_was.shtml.

I think the 'Committee for the Abolition of Theatre Queues' was a front for the Masons myself! |
