Have you seen this?
http://media.vonage.com/media/mpg/rocket.wmv
This looks like a setup to me. Firstly, in my experience, a model rocket of that size has a motor that only burns for a fraction of a second. Secondly the rocket end up under the truck, but somehow starts a fire in the bed of the truck, and thirdly (is thirdly a real word?) the whole fire extinguisher in the face thing looks staged.
I think there are three rockets set up and fired in this video. And maybe a third ignition circuit to start the fire in the truck. Your thoughts?

Your right, the propellent for these rockets burns extremely quickly. While it would still be hot and might even be on fire if installed incorrectly, all the propellent would have been used up with a couple of seconds.
But then, since it's in a commercial it doesn't surprise me that it's fake. |

From my geek file (rocketry as a hobby)... I would say seperate rockets. Plus, there is very little chance that the rockets could start a fire like that with the little engine that would fit in the rocket (what, maybe a C at most?) - by the time it came down and zipped around, it would be done. Might be warm, but it would be done.
On the other hand, I have seen some rather glorious accidents, but that usually involved much much bigger motors. |

Well...since this is for a commercial, I'd think that it was fake anyway. |

I guess I'm just too naive' I wanted to beleive that the series of commercials represented real videos. The other videos appear more real, but I'm 99% certain the Rocket was staged. I wonder if Vonage beleives it is real. For fun I might send them an e-mail and ask the soure of thier videos...

I have been in model rocketry for around ten years now and I know for a fact that was staged, it went up going straight so there would have been no way that an engine that small could make the rocket go that way after flying straight... even if it lost a fin.. as for the fire, it is possible but only when working with experimental motors (and that wasnt an experimental motor) |

A commercial like this, which I believe is staged, can do nothing but hurt model rocketry. People will start to believe that all model rocketry is dangerous. Parks will ban it for it's supposedly dangerous nature. I hope Vonage doesn't put this commercial in wide release.
I've never seen it in NC. |

I find it interesting that this very same conversation / forum discussion is also going on here:

All the Vonage commercials are fake. Take the one with the kid throwing the bat through the window. Slow-mo it, and it's so obvious that he throws the bat at the window on purpose.
Vonage doesn't stage them, they look like they probably come from America's Funniest Home Videos or some show like that. It's the show that got scammed. |

Of course it was staged. I helped make it. It won 10 grand in America's Funniest Home Videos back in 1997. Since AFHV specifically urges its viewers on many occasions to present a special type of film, it is not a "scam" when they are staged. If you are that offended by staged entertainment, why not denounce local Shakespeare productions? Those lousy frauds...
Anyways, Vonage bought the rights for it in early 2006.
Check your facts, by the way. Those engines burned for more than just a "fraction of a second." Some would go for anywhere between 20-35 seconds.
As far as being an affront to model rocketry, your predictions of gloom and doom are the closest I've ever seen anyone come to being discouraged by this film.
For the record, model rocketry isdanngerous, which is why it was shot in the desert near the Mexican border, since it is illegal to launch them in many other places in California. Still, knowing how to use model rockets in a controlled setting is not going to be the death knell for this hobby, although the lawn and house fires caused by enthusiasts such as yourselves might do a great deal to harm that cause. We have not. Please stop being so very irresponsible. It sickens me, and my fellow compentent model rocket enthusiasts. |

Yes it IS a scam if it's staged. AFHV (or AFV as they say now) asks people to send in "a special type of film" (a specific event) that has already been filmed. They don't ask you to make one up! They will disqualify you if they know it is a fake. |
