WAXAHACHIE, Texas - A North Texas school district has apologized to a student identified only as "Black Girl" in a high school yearbook photo of the school's National Honor Society.
All white students are identified by name in the photograph in the Waxahachie High School yearbook distributed Friday.
The teen identified as "Black Girl" is the only black student in the photo.
"I was embarrassed," said the student, Shadoyia Jones. "I was disappointed that they didn't catch the error."
Waxahachie school district spokeswoman Candace Ahlfinger said the district and the school board issued an immediate apology when the caption was reported.
Ahlfinger said the caption apparently was intended as a placeholder until the yearbook staff could identify the student.
She told the Waxahachie Daily Light that the label was a poor choice, but it was not meant maliciously nor meant to be printed.
"If it was a placeholder, why would you put that?" Jones asked. "Anything else would have worked for me but that."
Ahlfinger said the district is having the four pages affected by the mistake reprinted as soon as possible.

I don't know if it was really racist--some kid probably put "Black Girl" as a placeholder in order to make his friends laugh. |

I wonder how much they'll be selling for on eBay. |

Just found out about this. Heard she was working on the yearbook with them, so how could they not know her? I guess it was a joke to make people laugh, just like Citizen Premier said. But having 4 ENTIRE pages redone? That's just not right. That's taking it off the deep end! |

When I was in 6th grade, the school held a contest where students could send in their drawings, and one was picked to be on the cover of the yearbook. Well, one kid decided he would make a cool drawing, but hide the words "shit" and "sex" in the grass in the picture. His picture got chosen as the favorite without anyone realizing the words in the grass. The kid had submitted it as a joke, but didn't admit what he had done even after his drawing got chosen. The words in the grass were only noticed after all the yearbooks had been printed. The school administration spend days pasting these white sticker things over the corners of the book so you couldn't see the grass. Of course, all you needed to get it off what to wet the sticker a bit and rub it off. |

I only have one year book. There's nothing dirty in it...unless you count some of the things that people signed in it. |

I had a close call with my year book...had a friend who said she submitted a few...umm...interesting...photos of myself...the friendship was quickly terminated, and the photos withdrawn... |

Instead of a yearbook, I just tell people to sign my balls-two tennis balls, that is. The difficulty in writing on it prevents people from writing their life story. |

Best quote from this whole thing:
"Anything else would have worked for me but that."
She seems to be handling it pretty well. Let's hope that Rev. Jackson doesn't parachute in to exploit the situation. |
