BERLIN (Reuters) - After accepting what appeared to be a kind offer from a German motorist to tow his broken car, a stranded Polish motorist was taken on a terrifying high-speed joyride at speeds of 160 kph (100 mph), police said on Tuesday.
Police said a 36-year-old German man who offered assistance proceeded to hurl down the motorway at high speeds after tying a cable to the stranded car.
The Polish motorist, who remained inside his vehicle during the tow, flashed his lights and honked his horn at the speeding German driver to stop. Police said the Pole was finally able to bring the German to a halt by swerving his car back and forth.
The German was taken to a psychiatric clinic, police said.

What's the problem? It's not like he was breaking the speed limit or anything... IF he was on the Autobahn.

Yeah, but can you imagine being in the car...helpless??? My friend's husband towed my car w/ his truck once...I was super pregnant, and he wouldn't let me steer the broken-down heap. We put my brother in it, and he almost smashed ends quite a few times. I was really worried I was going to go into labor with only the 2 idiots around. (Helpful, but still idiots.) |

I would have broken the German's nose. What if the cable had broken, or he had taken a sharp turn only to have the towed car swerve into the other lane and hit another car. I don't think the posted speed limit was really a concern, if there was a posted one.
All in all pretty scarey but one hell of a ride! :wow: |

Isn't it considered dangerous to be in a car while it's being towed? |

Unless you are using a solid tow bar, you are usually required to have someone in the rear car for stearing/braking.
If you just used a chain tied around the bumpers/frame of both cars without a driver in the rear car, ever time the lead car hit the brakes it would get rear-ended.

Yeah, when my car was towed we used these wide ropes...not like rope-ropes, but maybe polyester or nylon or something.
Someone had to be in it to brake, and turn. |

It's hard to find somebody who knows how to be towed. The towee has to basically help the tower break for red lights and such. They have to keep the rope or chains tight. Otherwise, everytime you take off again you get a jerk and run the risk of breaking something. |
