Is it illegal to hoax something? Is there any kind of legal ramifications
for people who make fake bigfoot and nessie pictures?

Generally speaking, I think if you're doing it with the intent to make money, then it's illegal
If you're doing it to put someone in a bad light, then it's Slander/Libel and is illegal
If your doing it as a parody - that's fine
Fine it's a joke - it's fine (generally)
Certain hoaxes which might be illegal might be ignored on the grounds of good sportsmanship or even just because of the effect of going to court over it. |

I agree with Sharruma. I think it all depends on how far you take it and if it's in good fun or done with the intent to hurt somebody. But I wouldn't want to bend the law too far when doing it. |

Also if you're hoaxing with the intention of starting war/riots/violence, it's not going to be looked upon kindly by the powers that be. |

It all depends on the situation - a hoax can be seen as anything from a joke to fraud. I recall reading a book by hoaxmaster Alan Abel. One hoax in particular was pretty funny: He tied a string to his tooth, hung the string out of his mouth, then back into his mouth. He told people he was the subject of an experiment in which a small bucket was tied to the end of the string. The bucket sat in his stomach and a doctor would pull the bucket up from time to time to check his gastric juices. Needless to say, there was no bucket (the string simply went into his mouth for a couple of inches, and was tied to nothing but his tooth), but more than a few people were taken in by it. He |

Commit all hoaxes in a police station, I'm sure they'll let you know which ones will get you arrested. |
