Hang on, held together by duck tape? Shouldn't it be duct tape? 😕 |

I am absolutely sure that I read something about the fact it originally had been duck tape as it was waterproof, but now everyone says duct tape.
However, I can't find a darned thing about that on any of my daily sites, so I may have dreamt it.
Huh. |

Y'know, I always thought it was called duct tape because they use it on various ducting (ie air con and heating systems). Duck tape just makes me think it should have feathers and go "quack". 😝 |

I'm so confused.
I always used it for sculptures. If you used it on heating and air con is it not a little dangerous and flammable/meltable?
Still, do you know how happy I am that someone else is now posting?

I've been at this all day. I've been waiting for someone to clarify the duck/duct tape thing. Maybe they're different products in different countries. I think even electricians use duct tape here? |

Actually, I think they do here, too.
Ok, I work in an arts setting and they're in the middle of putting up a new exhibition at the gallery. I'll check.
Hmm. Well, it seems to be used as a temporary measure for sticking bits of cable to the floor. |

Okay, I'm pretty sure of what I THINK it is. But just to be safe, I sent an e-mail to 3M. The response said "within 24-48 hours".
And if your electrician uses duct tape for wiring, fire him on the spot before he burns whatever he is working on down. It is not a good electrical insulator, esecially once it starts to dry out.
3M makes the original duct tape. Or so they say, and no other company disputes them. But, I also know that there is a BRAND called "Duck Tape".
So, in summation, within two days we should have the official answer from the company that makes it. |

3M did invent it; a man named Richard Drew invented first adhesive in 1920. Duct tape came later in 1940, for use in military |

Adhesive tape (specifically masking tape) was invented in the 1920's by Richard Drew of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Co. (3M). Duct tape (the WWII military version) was first created and manufactured in 1942 (approximate date) by the Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division. Its closest predecessor was medical tape.
The original use was to keep moisture out of the ammunition cases. Because it was waterproof, people referred to the tape as "Duck Tape." Also, the tape was made using cotton duck - similar to what was used in their cloth medical tapes. Military personnel quickly discovered that the tape was very versatile and used it to fix their guns, jeeps, aircraft, etc. After the war, the tape was used in the booming housing industry to connect heating and air conditioning duct work together.
Soon, the color was changed from Army green to silver to match the ductwork and people started to refer to duck tape as "Duct Tape." Things changed during the 1970s, when the partners at Manco, Inc. placed rolls of duct tape in shrink wrap, making it easier for retailers to stack the sticky rolls. Different grades and colors of duct tape weren |

As for renaming the thread, post in your blog all about Red Green's recent demise on one of his home-built projects.
The duct-tape fans'll come out of the woodwork.
Then start a thread all about the whole sticky situation.

The only time I like renaming threads is when people create threads with totally vague, nondescriptive titles, like 'What about this?' or 'Interesting...' Then I sometimes go in and change the title so that people will have some idea what they're clicking on.
What would be better to do in a case like this is to create a new thread with 'duct tape vs. duck tape' as the title... and just use the comment that inspired the new discussion as the first post in that new thread.
The problem with doing this, however, (now that I think about it) is that it's not easy to move all the existing comments about duck tape into the new thread. So people would tend to keep posting into the old thread. So forget that idea.
Next thought: maybe it would be best to add to the title, rather than erasing what's already there. (i.e. make it: 'Smelly Sneaker Contest [also: duct tape vs. duck tape]). Yeah, that would probably be the best solution. |

Here's the reply I JUST got from 3M.
So it's kinda official, I guess...
"Dear Rod,
Thank you for your inquiry. We appreciate hearing from you.
Please be advised that 3M did not invent Duct Tape.
Is it Duct or Duck? We don't want you to be confused, so we will explain.
The first name for Duct Tape was DUCK. During World War II the U.S.
Military needed a waterproof tape to keep the moisture out of ammunition
cases. So, they enlisted the Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division to
manufacture the tape. Because it was waterproof, everyone referred to it
as? Duck? Tape (like water off a duck's back). Military personnel
discovered that the tape was good for lots more than keeping out water.
They used it for Jeep repair, fixing stuff on their guns, strapping
equipment to their clothing... the list is endless.
After the War, the housing industry was booming and someone discovered that
the tape was great for joining the heating and air conditioning ductwork.
So, the color was changed from army green to the silvery color we are
familiar with today and people started to refer to it as duct tape.
Therefore, either name is appropriate.
Today, Henkel Consumer Adhesives manufactures Duck |

I think we just uncovered something. I checked out te "Henkel" site and it made no mention of 3M in the Legal. That note from 3M is saying that the Henkel product is teriffic. Apparently 3M owns them as well. I worked for a wholesale company of office supply and computer perhipherals, you would be shocked what 3M dabbles in. They are even into weapons. They have their grubby little hands in everything, even Microsoft. |

Anyone surprised at how long 3M's fingers are should take a look around and realize that every large corporation has diversified so damned much that they're almost impossible to keep track of.
Many of the current leading medical companies made the chemicals that were dumped on Vietnam. Lilly, etc. They were all there, all the biggies. Many of the pharmaceutical companies, because they dealt with chemicals, supplied all of the components, if they did not do the actual mixing and shipping. They knew what they were for.
You'd be surprised at some of the stuff companies like Boeing own.
All you have to do is look around, the connections are all there. |
