Does he actually think being a game show contestant makes him a CBS employee?
My guess, though, is that he had no pockets to keep a calculator at the time...

..It does seem like they're trying to make an example of him. There are lots more people w/ more money screwing over the IRS...They're going after him b/c he is uneducated about the whole thing. |

Uneducated my ASS.
Name me a single American over the age of 40 that does not know they have to pay taxes on their money. (Yes the average, sane type, not mentally handicapped, etc.)
As for his argument that CBS should have withheld the taxes; even if they were supposed to and did not, he still has to pay said taxes. |

...Well, the AVERAGE American might not know the procedure of payng taxes on a million dollars. (I sure as hell don't, but would be glad to find out...if you've got a million you'd like to give me...I'll be sure to test out this little theory.)
Although, if it were me...the first thing I would have done was ask...how do I make sure taxes are paid, so I don't owe anthing?? |

Rod, I fixed the link, thereby slightly editing your post.
The software that runs my site can automatically turn urls into active links, but for some reason urls with question marks in them confuse it. The safest thing is to always place urls within links. |

Thanks, Alex... still getting the hang of this.
Message boards are new to me; until I started here, I'd never posted before, and didn't care how they worked.
I'm getting there... |

Didn't the guy suspect that the taxes hadn't been paid when the check said "1 Million Dollars?" If he thought, as he claims, CBS had withheld the taxes, he should have questioned why the check was for too darn much money when he made out the deposit slip with all those annoying zeros. |

Don't know about the rest of you, but I work in a field which is neither accounting nor taxes. My point being that getting audited SUCKS, so EVERY year I pay a professional (ex: HR Block) to prepare my taxes for me. I do this for the meager pittance that I live on from year to year. If I suddenly found myself with a drastic increase in income, such as this example, you can bet your ass I'd prepare my taxes through a paid service. At least for that year alone. This guy KNEW what the deal was, he just thought he'd see if he could slip through the cracks and got popped for it. Pay the taxes, fines, and late fees... your little plan didn't work Dick! Your excuse may save you from jail time, although it's still pitifully transparent in my opinion, but you're still going to pay the taxes + fines + late fees + interest... just like the rest of us would have to. 😉 |

The winner of the first Big Brother in Australia lost almost half his winnings in taxes and when you consider the prize was only 250k why would you even bother? (Remembering this is Aussie dollars which are worth almost as much as rocks) |

And for those of you who can't be bothered working out how much AUD$250K is in US$, it's around US$191K with the current exchange rate.
Damn, our money's worth bugger all! |
