I am needing some help about the stories of people buying a Chihuahua in Mexico, finding out later it was a RAT. A girl that I work with said she has a friend that it had happen too. Is there really a rat that can be shaved to look like a dog. If so, please provide link to a picture. I went to snoopes, but I was only able to find one thing about it, but didn't give me enough info, nor a picture.

Chihuahuas are dogs--and I've the reason that they're so small is that they were bread for eating! |

I've travelled in some third world countries and have seen rats the size of small dogs but a rat is a rat... |

What do you mean by more info?
I mean, it's an old chesnut that has been around for years. What more info do you want? There's a limited amount of information on things that are made up.
Rats in general would not put up with being shaved, especially wild rats, who wouldn't have the experience of being handled. Rats can lose their fur from natural causes, though.
The only pic I've found of a bald rat is here:

Other than pointing out that rats and chihuahuas look nothing alike, I don't really know what else to say. |

"Chihuahuas are dogs--and I've the reason that they're so small is that they were bread for eating!"
For some reason I just pictured a large sandwich with Chihuahuas used as bread. Could be a new delicacy...I just can't decide on whether to keep the dogs alive to add to the entertainment value of watching someone eat it. |

This is an old and very lame urban ledgend. If you think about it, you can see that it's impossible. Have you ever seen a rat? Have you ever seen a chihuahua? I know they're small, but they have much longer legs than a rat, their mouths and teeth are different, and they behave much differently. Tell your friend you want to meet her friend to confirm the story. Say you'd like some pictures, ask how they brought it back into the US. |

Ok, I am now putting my question to rest. I was just wanting to make sure that there wasn't a rat that resembled a chihuahua, I was curious. If there was, surley one of you would have info. Thanks for the help. |

Stephen, you need to buy and read The Mexican Pet by Jan Harold Brunvand:

I did a quick search on google for "baby rat" and chihuahua puppy. You might find that when very young, many mammals of similar size are difficult to differentiate. I had some trouble posting the pics here, so you can look for yourself. I think they look close enough, and that there are enough gullible people in the world, that the story COULD be true. Personally, I'd never mistake a rat for a dog, but when I was in Thailand, I thought dog was beef once. That sucked. |

I wonder if and how the salesman made the rat bark? Did he have a dalmatian ventriloquist under the counter?
I could see somebody being convinced that a shaved rat was chihuahua. People believe in all kinds of stupid crap that their eyes tell them is untrue. But I absolutely cannot believe that there's more than one person that gullible and stupid for every few hundred miles or so, let alone a whole group in one car, meeting up with the border guards, who were just as gullible and stupid.
Have you ever tried to get any animal back from another country and into the U.S.? Hell, they won't even let you bring back FRUIT. |

My G/F wants a black Chihuahua, I hat those things. One time I almost had her convinced that a Chihuahua was actually a form of rodent. |

you people are so dumb!
Yes Chihuahuas are small but they do NOT look like rats.
BUT, if you look closely in the mirror, you may well see a rat staring vack at you 😊 |
