I stumbled across this on a blog tonight and something about it just seems odd. I ran it through google and can't find The Library of Life mentioned anywhere except their site. Maybe it is new and I am just being suspicious, so I thought I would post it here and see if anyone knows anything about them. It's that Urgent request thingy that always gets me to wondering.....
Urgent request for help from Library of Life and The IFRC
Dear Sir/Madam,
I have been deeply touched by your blog’s coverage of the recent tragedy in Asia. The way ‘Tsunami Help India’ has helped to make the outside world aware of the plight of the affected people, is highly commendable.
I am contacting you with a request for your kind help from the Library of Life; a website (www.libraryoflife.org) whose aim is to compile the life stories of millions of people around the world, thereby creating the world’s first universal record of life that lasts forever. The website raises funds for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and in this time of need they have asked us to create a living memorial to all the victims of this tragedy. This will be done through photographs, text, film, sound and scanned documents on the site.
The Library of Life, in association with the IFRC, is inviting all those whose lives have been affected by the tragedy to create a free memorial to commemorate their loved ones, or post their own experiences as a record for all future generations. We have also set up an online ‘Tsunami Book of Condolence’, which we are inviting the public to sign and express their feelings on this terrible disaster.
In order for this great humanitarian project to be successful it is essential that we have as much information and reach as many people as possible. We therefore, kindly request that you give us your assistance by contributing to the Library of Life through posting your experiences and opinions directly on our site, or allowing us to put some information from your site on our own. Furthermore, if you would be prepared to put a message on your blog about us and a link from your blog to our website, that would be wonderful. In return we will happily give you a reciprocated link from our own site to yours, as well as a complementary membership.
Please have a look at our site and contact me at [email protected] and let me know your thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Henry Hardy

You would not believe how happy I was to finally get a Commodore 64 (I adore my 64, my Commodore 64!) after having spent so much time playing that damned pirate game on the Vic-20 (not to mention Lunar Lander).
32 is old? I hope not, I'm 31.
The IBM Pet was the computer in our school. It had a network so that a dozen or so computers could use the disk drive. Never at the same time, of course. They ran (according to the guts when I ripped one apart 😊 ) at 1Mhz. The modem was 100 baud. We never got to use it, because to connect to another computer we had to phone the US.
I dunno, sometimes I get a little nostalgic for the old tape drive, and "Shopper". (Kinda like frogger, but with a shopping cart, and WAY worse graphics.)
I still remember logging onto usenet for the first time, and trying to explain the concept of "the internet" to my parents. ( At that time, it was an IBM PC40 III, with a whole 12Mhz clockspeed, 40 Meg Hdd, 1 Meg RAM, and two of the best computer games ever, Space Quest and the original Leisure Suit Larry.)
By the way, if anyone is a Roger Wilco fan, I have the link around here somewhere to download the original version of SQ1 from the web. |

Wow. That brings back memories! I remember being one of the first kids in school to have a home PC. Hmmm...mum swore never to buy a cheap brand again (she bought an Amstrad). And this was in 94! I also remember some hilarious times playing Larry on a friend's PC a few years later...oh those were the days!
I also always find it a bit of a worry that my mum knows more about PCs than I do...although that doesn't stop her from double-clicking hyperlinks...will she never learn! 😊 |

Wow. I missed all the excitement. Anyway Tim/Gerry was obviously trolling. I wonder if he actually has anything to do with the Library of Life, or whether he was just some random guy looking for an argument. |

I'm not so sure Tim was random... he really seemed to have a fixation with Rod's Mom... perhaps Rod may want to elaborate on their relationship. Rod? Something you need to share with the group? Rod? hmmm... not answering. I think an intervention is called for. You guys hold him down and I'll make him swallow his tongue with a pencil. Rod- it's for your own good |

Greetings,
Signing Gerry as Tim was to illustrate the point which you have all failed to take. It was simply showing that someone supporting an unsubstantiated comment would exacerbate the damage of the original comment. The fact that you spent so much trying to figure it out is extraordinary considering it was signed Tim (just to give you a small clue as to the point).
How can you expect me to continue an argument when you throw back comments stating I have not made a point. Alex was the only one to take it on board and realise the damage an out-of-context Google reference could do to a reputation.
I did not say that your comments were detrimental to the brand - I was simply making a point about how an unjustified comment should be retracted, or should at the very least, not be allowed to be indexed when such indexing would see the comment out of context. Sigh. And all you keep coming back with was that the comment was not that damaging - THAT WAS NOT THE POINT.
Considering the 'intended' nature of your forum, you certainly don't open your minds to the issues being discussed.
And for heavens sakes, cut this nonsense about personal attacks when it was your own little incestuous dim-wit who threw the first punch.

Please point out where I threw back a comment stating how you have not made a point.
"Speaking nonsense and what seems like innocent thought provoking speech is one thing, but slanderous remarks that are damaging, whether you see this or not, become somewhat serious" - Tim
RIGHT THERE was where you said my comments were detrimental.
Why do you feel that me making a point has no bearing? I stated before that I was not at all concerned with most of what you were saying, because it was all beside the whole point.
And calling you a litigious dork is a personal attack? You were offering veiled threats of lawsuits, and, if you look it up, dork means foolish person, which describes you fairly well, as your argument is based on a foolish idea. That idea being that anything said against this website is slanderous, even if it is absolutely true and can be proven by reading the website itself.
The veiled threat plus the foolish idea make you, pretty clearly, a litigious dork. It's not a personal attack if it's true.
People who are concerned about the above website are most probably not going to google it, and then automatically decide that it's crap because there is one little blurb out of many that has the word HOAX in it.
And I find it quite hilarious that you comment about stopping the personal attacks includes one. |

Oh my God, nobody even talk to the bloody troll.
Oh no, that's libelous/slanderous/detrimental speech! SOMEONE WILL SUE ME OVER THE INTERNET!What will happen now?
And I will say for the record (and Alex is certainly free to remove this comment if he likes) that I DON'T believe it's a good idea for the Library of Life people to assert that these memorial things will "last forever." The Internet will end. A giant asteroid could hit Earth tomorrow. They might not be able to find someone else to take over ownership of it once the original people-in-charge die. Humankind will die off eventually; where will these records be?
But then again, I don't really believe all that hoopla about the Eternal Flame, either... |

Rod,
I did not say they were detrimental, my comment was "slanderous remarks that are damaging" - That does not specifically need to refer to the comment made. It refers to slanderous comments made about anything. You are all taking every point I have made and relating it specifically, without exception, to the actual comment made.
Further, I did not threaten to sue anyone. I simply made the point that a comment such as that COULD lead to legal action. It was a point being made about unjustified slander, not about me wanting to sue anyone.
My comment on personal attacks - It is called a sense of humour and I am not the one crying about the comments. Your sad little friends are bitching about them and I defended this by pointing out that you threw the first punch.
Go back and read through what has been said, relating it to slanderous comments and you might begin to grasp the points I was making.
---------
Katherine,
Continuing on the whole issue of being sued only points out that you too, cannot grasp a point, leading me to wonder why you spend so much time in a forum such as this (not that this promotes much by way of thought as nobody manages to follow a thought process).
In as much as your constant referrals to being sued are vaguely amusing, I will, for the last time, point out that it was a comment regarding unjustified slander and the law. I DID NOT THREATEN anybody, nor could I give a rats arse about anyone in this forum, and if you are going to continue down this road, you are simply proving your lack of comprehension at a simple statement.
As for the examples you suggest as reasons against perpetuity. Have you ever heard of the theory of relativity? By a little-known man called Einstein (I fear I might have to actually point out the sarcasm, or face abuse as to the fact that he was fairly well known)? If not, do yourself a favour and find out a little more about him.
Okay brightspark! (that's you Katherine!) If a giant asteroid was to wipe out the earth, what exactly would our perception of 'forever' have been? and would the records have lasted 'forever'?
I have spent far too much time on you guys in the sense that this is a complete waste of time and energy. I am going to leave it here and wish you all well. Sigh. |
