Hmmmm mine ended up being 50x21 when I resized it. Would the size difference make it not show up Alex? |

Yeah, very respectable. Maybe too respectable. Much more of this and I'll have to start wearing pants when I'm browsing here. |

Very cool avatar, Myst. I've got a black cat who often stares at me just like that (when she's not sleeping or chasing around the house like a maniac).
http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/images/BooFace.jpg
Glad you got the avatar working. The size difference probably made it not show up if it was an animated gif. A non-animated gif wouldn't have made a difference. But the software is going to resize any image to 50x50 to stop people from using massive pictures as their avatars. |

...Question...
What's the difference between entries, comments, weblog entry...and all that stuff. I don't get it. |

Entries (or posts, or topics, or threads... all the same thing) are what appear at the top of the page. They're simply the original thing that's posted.
Comments are then all the follow-up remarks that people make about the original post.
The software program I use treats entries and comments differently... because it's really designed to be used for the creation of weblogs, not message boards. |

I have a black cat who stares at me like that too, at least when he isn't busy harrassing my other five cats or my three dogs.
I found out it wasn't the size of the .gif, it was the link from Image Venue that wasn't working properly. I had to play with the HTML code a bit to get it to work. |

Rex, your avatar would be the famous "Mayor Macheese", who lived in relentless pursuit of the "Hamburglar" in "MacDonald Land". Am I right, or am I right? |

Unfortunately there's no way to get views anymore. The software simply doesn't keep track of them. So you get avatars, but you lose page views. |

Ummm Alex, are you playing around with the forum again?
I only ask because I just noticed a minor glitch. The avatars don't appear to be working in all of the topics. Strange....the mysterious disappearing avatars, a case worthy of the Museum of Hoaxes. LOL
Is anyone else seeing this odd phenomenon? Or is it my Firefox browser doing weird things again. |

Myst, I noticed that also. The reason is the switch from the old board to the new one. On the old message board there was no membership and no avatars. And unfortunately all the comments that were posted on the old board still retain that quality. The software running the new message board isn't smart enough to realize that someone called Myst who posted a comment on the old message board is the same Myst posting comments in the new system.
I'm not sure I explained that very well, but basically it comes down to this: Any comment you made after jan. 1 will have your avatar associated with it. Any comment from before Jan. 1 (or before I updated the message board) won't. |

Other than linking directly to an image or saving an image to my computer...is there any other way to use an av?? Security prevents me from right clicking...unless I'm in specific Claims Programs. I can't even Copy/paste by right clicking, I have to Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V all day long. (I have to copy a lot of claims notes from one program to another...only 1 of the 3 programs allows me to right click.) |

If you have an image in mind, you can just email it to me. I'll save it on the site and email you back the url to link to it. If you then write down that url on a piece of paper and retype it in the appropriate place, you'd never have to use right click. |

The new look... not easy on eyes.
I would prefer not so contrasting background colors, and different font style. Plus, there are too many frames/tables making the column rather squeezed. |

"I must say that, out of all the possibilities for your avatar, batman would have ranked pretty low."
-Batman is only the best Super Hero ever. Being self-made...his powers do not come from an alien sun, a magic ring, an island of women, or from some potion that makes him big. He has studied, trained, learned how to look moody even though he's got a bazillion dollars, & he has the best get-around vehicle. |

Wouldn't it be a little hard to impersonate you? A person would have to have the same avatar, or is that a common avatar? I don't know much about these things which is why I ask. And why would someone impersonate you? To cause trouble and not get caught, or to get you kicked off of the site, or something else? |

Two members can't have the same screenname as each other, but a nonmember can have the same screenname as a member, which can make things a little confusing. However, the only way to avoid this problem would be to only allow members to post comments.
A nonmember, however, can't have an avatar.
In case somebody is impersonating somebody else, it is possible to check on their ip address.
Oh, and you're right. I do use message board and forum interchangeably. I guess I should be consistent. |

What about splitting the forum into categories? There are 3 or 4 Turin Shroud threads, quite a few Ebay threads...some people post about the same thing, but title it differently...so if someone scans the topics, they may not realize "obscure title here" is about the UFO seen resting on the White House lawn...so they post a new thread about the same thing.
Another board I visit just has a few main categories (4 I think), and then from there, no more than 4 subcategories. You might have General Hoaxes, Internet Hoaxes, Headline Hoaxes. And then inside general hoaxes you have religious, political, misc. Under Internet you could have websites, ebay, misc. Headlines would be from news stories of course...
I don't know. I was just thinking that keeping the different threads straight might keep the duplicate threads down. Incidents of duplicates on the other board is rare...and the site owner does move some threads from one category to another if he thinks it's more appropriate somewhere else, though there is always a little link in it's place for a week "such and such thread moved to politics". |

The forum actually can already be split into categories. Just click on one of the category links. But maybe if I listed what the categories were, that would be more helpful. The only problem is that I can't figure out an elegant way to show all the categories, besides listing them all at the top or the bottom of the page. |

Actually, there isn't. I hadn't noticed that before. But you can create one. Click on the login link. Then click on 'My Account'. Then click on 'Quick Links'. That will let you put whatever links you want at the top of the toolbar on the 'publish' page.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if there's a way for me to automatically program those links in for every member, but I'll see what I can do. |
