No, that's not a shadow. Scroll down to the bottom to see the water-like feature. But if there was water on Mars we would have heard about it in the news. |

Ah. Well The "top left hook" seemed too obvious.
Yes the "puddle" at the bottom also looks like water.
I'm sure that's just what we want it to be too. |

Isn't it a bit cold for liquid water on mars?

Hairy? Nuts? eeeyuw... That's not water, kids. It's OIL. Why the hell else would GWB want us to go there so badly? Unless it's Vodka... hmmm...

That makes sense Hairy, why the sudden interest in mars once again? Oil! Big-Bush & Baby-Bush gotta go get some. |

This looks like a really up-close picture, for one thing; which means that perhaps it is some chemical dumped out of space equipment or something... but it doesn't look like martian geography anyways. More like some bad picture someone took. Where did you read that this was from mars? |

Hairy is right. It IS vodka. Vodka! Grey Goose, anyone?
Rex D is right. It is too cold on the surface of Mars for liquid water.
Paranormal.about.com is about on the same level as Coast to Coast with George Noorey: hogwash. They try to purport themselves to be more serious, like snopes.com, but I beg to differ. |

It's a great thought about vodka or even a martian urine 😊 Well I think we'll never know for sure what is there in a fact for sure. And I don't mean water or something. I mean that they will tell us just what they want to tell us and what they want us to tell to each other. |

I still say the martians play games seeing who can pee on the moving target the most. Wouldn't you if you were on such a dull and boring planet? I'd even pee on astronauts when they came to mars. Astronauts are moving targets, aren't they? That's kinda' like this game I invented called "go to the middle east and touch as many people as you can with your left hand in one minute." I'm thinking about making a point system. ❓ |

I don't know how odd this thought is but to me, the picture likes a warhammer fighting surface and the picture has just been taken in black and white. |

Thanks Rex, but I am no computer master. :red: I know a few tricks here and there and that is about it.
Did you try refreshing the page? sometimes a page doesn't load for one reason or another, especially if you are using Internet Explorer for your browser |

Yes, but with no such luck. I suck at this technological crap. I was against computers when they started infiltrating homes all across America, so haven't had much play with them. I inadvertantly kept myself out of the loop. When I saw my stand as a failure, I joined the crowd. Computer. Yay. Thats why I know nothing about them. Funky huh? |

I wish I could help you, but my browsers etc are set at the default settings, I never mess with that stuff. |

Original photo does not look like having a water ever somewhere around the rocks. It looks like a grey sand. Seems like the pic that started this discussion was somehow corrected for the liquid effect. |

I hope your not talking about martian pee. You just leave that up to me. Alright? I'm the martian pee king! No, really though, if your talking about the pic up in the corner, forget it. You need to go find a bigger and more clear pic. It really does look like water, but it can't be. Cuz' it's martian pee. |

that does look like sand. Also, if you look at the NASA pic and the one in the first link, some shadowing has been added to the second one by someone, and it appears that some areas of the image have been darkened and brightened, making it appear as if it was water, not martian sand. |

If you go back to the APOD Index site, and look up the posted picture for 07/20/05, there is an excellent photo of real water ice on Mars. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap050720.html

stork, the pic worked so you can do it that way, or you can:
click "link" on the bar above the message box where it says 'strong', 'em', etc. Paste in the link, title it, and either ignore the last prompt or post something in it. That should work in the future.

Ultra fine dust that's left undisturbed can give the appearance of water or liquid when viewed under the right conditions. This is a published picture and has been around. So, the only part of it that's a hoax, is the part where someone took it and said that area was water (because it looks like it) when in reality it's not. Mars is so cold that liquid water poured from a glass would freeze and crystalize before it ever even hit the ground, something I have seen happen here on Earth where it's MUCH warmer. No chance for liquid water on Mars without some external heat source such as volcanism. |
