Bush misremembers

Most people have difficulty, at one time or another, remembering things that have happened; George Bush apparently has no difficulty remembering things that haven't.
President Bush has been reported as remembering seeing on TV the first plane hit the WTC according to a CNN transcript ; he is reported as saying:
'. . . you're not going to believe what state I was in when I heard about the terrorist attack. I was in Florida. And my chief of staff, Andy Card -- actually I was in a classroom talking about a reading program that works. And I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower -- the TV was obviously on, and I use to fly myself, and I said, "There's one terrible pilot." And I said, "It must have been a horrible accident."
But I was whisked off there -- I didn't have much time to think about it, and I was sitting in the classroom, and Andy Card, my chief who was sitting over here walked in and said, "A second plane has hit the tower. America's under attack."'
Is this a true record of what he said? (CNN does say: " THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED" although it hasn't been changed for a few years so we ought to be able to consider it to be in its final form). Surely what he said (that he saw the plane hit as it happened) can't be true. The bit I've quoted does contain some Bushisms and also what is probably a CNNism (but they are neither hallmarks of authenticity or falsity) - and the source (CNN) ought to be reliable. It's a bit strange that Bush says something that is undeniably false without noticing.

False memory syndrome seems to be quite common among politicians. I remember reading that Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was inspired to become a republican by watching Nixon debate McGovern in 1972. One problem. Nixon never debated McGovern. |

There is a piece of video of the first plane that hit the Trade Center. If I recall correctly, it was shot by a film crew that was doing a documentary on a NYC fire station. One of the crew says something like, "Damn! That plane is flying low!" The camera man focuses on the plane and follows it right into the building. A bunch of people start cursing, and the firemen rush out to go to the site.
This site mentions the video of the first plane: http://newswithviews.com/NWVexclusive/exclusive34.htm (scroll about half way down).
But this video was not released to the news organizations until a few days after the event. I'd imagine this was the case because the film had to be developed, and then it had to be analyzed by federal authorities. I saw it on TV, but it was, as I said, a few days after the event. |
