LJ user investigated

I ran across this Livejournal entry, and it really sounds kind of scary. Can this be true?
"For all my LJ-loving friends, this is a word of warning, a word to the wise, and a word of utter exhaustion after the wringer I've been put through in the last twenty-four hours.
"A couple of weeks ago, following the last presidential debate, I said some rather inflammatory things about George W. Bush in a public post in my LJ, done in a satirical style. We laughed, we ranted, we all said some things. I thought it was a fairly harmless (and rather obvious) attempt at humor in the face of annoyance, and while a couple of people were offended, as is typical behavior from me, I saw something shiny and forgot about it, thinking that the whole thing was over and done and nothing else would come of what I said.
"I was wrong.
"At 9:45 last night, the Secret Service showed up on my mother's front door to talk to me about what I said about the President, as what I said could apparently be misconstrued as a threat to his life."

Here's a screenshot of what she said in her journal from a google cache for those who haven't seen it yet.

Was she investigated? Did someone turn her in, or did the feds find her entry through some sort of "search" device w/ keywords. It's a heated debate in LJ land. (; |

If you read the followup, she says it was reported by someone at or using LJ, which woudl be typical. The Secret Service has to investigate all such report, even if it's obvious to them there's nothing to it. This really isn't a big deal, despite all the hysteria about "having a file at the Secret Service." Whoopee. Does anybody really think that some future Secret Service agent will see that file, which says, basically, "somebody who didn't like this person made a bogus report, and it's obvious that it was bogus," and cause her some sort of trouble?
They get, literally, thousands (and perhaps tens of thousands) of such reports every year. |

You know, my anger about this has been boiling higher and higher all day.
Don't these agencies have something else to do. Don't you think their time would be better spend by looking for Osama Bin Laden or al-Zarqawi????
Dear americans, you have scary little rabbits looking over you. I'm not sure who you should be more afraid of: your own government or fundementalist muslims. |

The Secret Service's job is to protect the President and a few other important people. It is agains the law to make threats against the life of the President.
Republican, Democrat, or Klingon, you can't go around exspousing assination of our head of state.
Sorry to be a downer, but a fact's a fact (unless Alex says different) |

Well, the other possibility is that it's all a lie anyway.
She *is* a fanfic writer.
And I agree with Brenda. And Annie (as she admits) should have known better.
Come on, we don't joke with the airport personel anymore about someone else handling our bags, do we? There are a few things you'd be better off not joking about ..
1. killing the president
2. baggage stuff at the airport
and
3. customs.

We have to get away from this scared attitude. Some idiot left a box full of books at our local bus station and wrote "bomb' on the side of it. There were no more busses running the whole day. This must have cost a 100.000 euros as well in police and army forces.
Be on the watch, yes....but please don't be scared. |

I'm not scared, but I'm also not niave. As far as I know it's never been ok to say "Please kill the president."
I know her post was written in jest but the SS didn't. If they were indeed called out, they did what they had to do.
feh.
Do you have an el jay Paul? (; |

el jay is Livejournal, aka the drama capital of the internets. That post she made is being talked about all over. |

Fine, I still don't see what whether or not I have an "el jay" has to do with any of this.
I'm stepping out of this.
FBI, CIA, whatever other agencies, peoples who read "el jay's" readers of this forum: get back to reality.
Don't be the chicken, be the fox.

NO, thank all of you for your input. I'm still curious as to whether anybody can attest to the veracity of this girl's story; i.e., whether or not the secret service actually responded on account of somebody's LJ ramblings.
I've said some pretty inflammatory things on my journal, but never about the President, and I've certainly never been investigated.
Has anybody else out there had any experience with the secret service, whether related to an internet post, or any other reason? |

Gary, I never have. I've seen on LJ a another instance where she was investigated by the FBI but I didn't stick around long enough to find out the reasons.
Paul, the reason I asked if you had an LJ isn't because I think you *should* but instead because of the nature of LJ. Livejournal is rather rampant with fake journals and claims. I'm just trying to spread light on that particular aspect.
Oh and Gary, I suspect we'll never really know. :/ I'm inclined to think it could have happened, but I gotta tell you, if it happened to me I don't think I'd have made a huge post about it -at least not publically. The last thing I'd want at that point would be *more* attention. |

Because of 9/11 people are running scared. They act like it IS going to happen again, EXACTLY like before. Just because we get on 'high alert' all the damn time, doesn't mean that it's going to keep someone dead set on screwing us into the ground from doing something terrible. These people are willing to be blown into pieces just to kill 1 or 2 Americans. It's sick, it's sad...but unless we can stop them from believing in the things they believe in...it's not going to stop.
What I can't figure out is why the hell people are so dead set on hating America/ns. We're always the first ones to step up and help. Yeah, sometimes we're pushy & loud...but if we didn't help...people would bitch and complain that we weren't helping. Anyone remember Pearl Harbor? People kept asking, when will American get involved? Why isn't American helping?? We stayed out of it as long as we could & BLAMMO! We got bombed. So, now, we go in as soon as things look heated to keep our in-country explosions to a minimum. It's okay to come here & spend your money on Disney & it's okay for us to go & visit the Eiffel Tower...but GOD FORBID you like us a little bit.
Not to mention...hot ticket on the black market? American Jeans. Tommy, Calvin, Levi... |

I would not be surprised if this is true - the Secret Service's unofficial motto has been "Paranoia is our profession" long before 9/11. I had a high school teacher who mentioned he had once been investigated by them after he assigned his class to write a story about somebody assassinating the President and the likely aftermath.
I'm not sure what the odds are that a future Tim McVeigh would drop a clue about wanting to kill government people on a website or blab about it in a bar. However, that sort of clue might be the only one somebody might give before pulling the trigger. So, investingating a rant like that does not seem terribly unreasonable - arresting someone for a post like that would, but that doesn't seem to have happened. |

Freedom fries, anyone? And we're not always first. We're only first when it's in our best interest.
but unless we can stop them from believing in the things they believe in...it's not going to stop.
Suggestions on how? What exactly is it that they believe that you want to change? |

I publically call for the removal of George Bush, by any and all means legally necessary. Vote him out, impeach him, use civil non-compliance, but to call for his death is irresponsible. I'm not sure it's illegal, but it does tend to call attention to ones' self. The young lady's posts seemed harmless enough, but I understand that the general rule of thumb for The Secret Service is to investigate, in varying intensities, any and all public proclamations of intent or desire to kill the President. I'm no friend of a Police State, and I'm a great advocate for free speach, but visits by The Man to those who call for violence might be expected these days. right or wrong. |
