HOAX?
"I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *677. It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. *Lauren's parents have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. *
Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called *677 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher ..."
Is *677 dialed on your cell phone a hoax story or not? |

Well, I just tried it from my cell phone. first I tried *677 and then just 677 by it's self. Both times I got the same message saying that the number or code I entered was incorrect. I use Sprint ... Sprint is, as you know one of the major cell phone providers in the United Stated, if it were not a hoax, I'm sure it would have worked on Sprint.
This email has been circulating on the net for the past 5 years that I know of ... Hoax? I am positive of it, But don't trust me, give it a try on your cell phone,, the worse thing that could happen is a police dispatcher could answer, then you simply explain to them that you wanted to know if this was a hoax or not.. |

As a dispatcher, I have to ask the question. Why use a strange 4 digit code to call for help? The phone company came out with a great 3 digit code years ago. It's 911. If you have someone behind you and you're not sure if it's a cop. To us, that qualifies as an emergency. There is the possibility that a town has certain numbers that connect directly with police. There's one in Washington State to report drunk drivers (*41 or something like that.) that only works if you're on the highway. So could that number be good in that area? Yes, but why use it.
Now... I have heard stories of people pretending to be cops and getting away with certain crimes. Could this scenerio happen? Yes, I believe it can. However, I have to believe that this exact story is made up based on facts of others.
And that's my 2 cents. |

Why not just dial 911? |

I came across this on a site:
What you have just read is an Ontario, Canada variant of an urban legend circulating via email since March 2002. While it's true that the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) can be reached by dialing *677 (numerical equivalent of *OPP) on any phone in the province.
So it won't work outside of Ontario. |

in nc and sc you can dail *67 (*hp) from your phone to get a highway patrol dispatcher. i have used this to report drunk driving, dangerous driving situations, etc. so maybe it was just a typo after so many fwds..... |

Yeah, that's great amber, except that *hp would be *47, not *67, moron. |

I figured trying it wouldn't hurt to find out if it's true or not, so I did. The MA state police were not laughing when I told them there was no emergency, that I was just seeing if an email I received was true.
So... not sure if the reason is I have Verizon Wireless or that I live in Massachusetts, but it sure worked for me.
I still think 911 is just easier to dial - less numbers, we all know 911 (who's going to remember *677 when you are trying to evade a rapist?), and it works in all states). |
