Alex:To help answer your question regarding your use of imagery already in public dissemination via the internet,specifically the dilly with Nat Geo: my instinct tells me that you are in the right, reporting such imagery and dispersal, but I also sense that there will be a firm who visciously protects their images (such as Disney, who will protect their 75 year-old image of MM to the death, well after a point where other works of art, speech, and film have gone into public domain) and slaps you bigtime, only because they can...I'm no lawyer, but money talks... Personally, I don't think you are liable for any damages in this case, because as you say, your copy photo(s) were of lesser quality than the original...unfortunately, some could argue that the lower res photos damages Nat Geo by lowering quality... do a google search on public domain, etc. and hope for the best
