This is an old urban legend, dating back to the 1970s (1974 to be exact). There's no truth to it at all.
It all started with a petition filed by some California broadcasters who asked the FCC to investigate whether scarce FM radio frequencies were being monopolized by religious groups "locked into a bleak, self-centered and miasmic view of man's capability for knowledge." The FCC gave this petition a number (RM-2493) for administrative reasons, but denied the petition in August, 1975.
But somehow the rumor started to spread around that the FCC was really considering this petition, and somewhere along the line Madalyn O'Hair's name got attached to it, even though she had nothing to do with it.
As you can see, people have added new details to the original story to keep it current with the times, like the phony detail about why CBS cancelled 'Touched by an Angel.'
And that final line about our Constitution being based on the 10 commandments. All I can say is 'Huh?' Evidently the person who made that claim has never read the Constitution, which derives in no way at all from the 10 Commandments. |

Thanks. I was certain that that could not be true and wanted to have some sort of supporting document to send to the idiot who forwarded it to me. |

Hey, the "Lisa Norman" email address is fake, too. I just tried to send a "TEST" email to that hotmail address and got an "undeliverable" message. Either it's not correct, or the real owner of this email address got fed up of getting all these names every hour, since all these folks since 1974 are STILL sending out the same email. I've sent the http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/fcc.htm article to all my friends who sent this silly article to me, pleading for me to send it to everyone.
Yes, it's an important issue, but if it were even true, I think our church officials would be the ones sending this kind of "request" out.
Thanks! |
