It is real. I have freinds that used to do it. They were in a group here in Austin, Texas called ICU. They called it suspensions, and considered it very spiritual. They hung from their shoulders, chests, arms, and one guy did his knees. There is also a group from Seattle that does it as well. This was actually big in the 90's, but is kind of out of style now.

the meathooking info is probably not that overblown, its a activity where folks embed steel hooks through the skin and or muscles and literally hang their whole bodies off the ground.
It looks like it hurts a bit, and what seems to be interesting is the "COMA" suspension that appears to be prompted by the book and movie adaptation by Michael Crichton.
