A claim by a 79 year old Melbourne man, that he shot the dingo that killed Azaria Chamberlain, makes him one of Australia's worst hoaxers or a partcipant in the cover up of one of the more intriguing murders in Australia's history.
The story of how 4 men thought that they were shooting at a rabbit, when they discovered they had killed a dingo carrying a dead baby in its mouth. The men cleaned up the baby and one of them took it back to Melbourne and buried Azaria in their backyard. The man is the last survivor of the group and did not want to carry the secret to his grave. He did not report the incident at the time because he was carrying a weapon in a national park, and did not want to be persecuted.
Police are investigating his claims and it remains to be seen if his story is true.
