US News & World Report did a short piece on the Breatharians back in Aug 2002. I don't have the article at hand, but the consensus is that the Breatharians are obviously lying when they claim that they are living on air alone. In a similar vein, back in the 18th century James Graham claimed that he could survive without food by immersing himself in mud:

There was a TV program about a woman who is a leading figure of the Breatharians. The camera crew followed her around her house and talked with her husband and daughter. At one point the daughter said something like her mother drinks water and eats stuff like chocloate and fruit, not because she needs to but just because she likes the taste!!
There was another case where they isolated a Breatharian woman in a room for 2 weeks. She lost weight, became dehydrated and had to be taken to hospital to be rehydrated. She claimed it was all due to a stomach upset and nothing to do with not eating or drinking. Ho, hum, selective memory?
If you interested in this type of thing lookup the nutters who stare - supposeldy open eyed - at the sun to absorb sustanance and don't go blind. |
