I've collected pop tabs for fund-raising before. It's legitimate. They don't seem like much, but I guess they're worth at least a few cents, and with all the pop people drink, you can collect a lot. |

No, it started as a hoax but people refused to believe it and so the collective force of stupidity overwhelmed these groups and they started accepting the tabs. It only became real after the fact. |

THIS IS NOT A HOAX.
As a kidney transplant recipient, the Kidney Foundation collects soda can tabs and turns them in for cash. In turn they donate the funds to the organization. Why they dont collect the entire soda can? Thats a good questtion, but i turn in my tabs once a year to my Transplant Coordinator. YES tabs are valuable!!!! They are pure high grade aluminum. The cans are mixed alloys and coloring and other additives that must be purified. Also the tabs are easier to carry as they are more dense. A garbage bag full of cans weighs less than a garbage bag of tabs. I took a few large boxes of cans in and got $15, the same boxes filled with tabs got me $1500. |

That said, if you're still REALLY SET on sending your pop tabs so somebody else can do the really hard work for you, apparently these folks at the Canadian Legion are at the head of it all (as an example of mythologizing pop tabs, elsewhere it's reported that these folks raised enough money for 400 wheelchairs...in this article they themselves say it's 24):
http://www.druid.net/rides/robert/tabs.html
Bless THEM for giving wheelchairs to 24 people who didn't have them before. They did the work. As for the "it's the thought that counts" folks who collect pop tabs without any conception of how much they're REALLY contributing -- compared to how much they COULD contribute if they'd actually sacrifice something -- well..."keep thinking!" |

Pop tabs are not made of any sort of special, high-grade metal. They ARE worth something: apparently 0.03 cents a tab (though some recycling plants won't collect them).
Why criticize people who collect pop tabs? Because the cost of collecting and transporting/shipping them surely outweighs the tiny amount they're worth. The only reason they ARE worth anything is because people are (strangely) willing to put so much energy into dealing with them.
The can itself is worth much more than the tab, but I guess collecting and returning cans is just too hard for most people.
The bottom line: rather than collect 100 pop tabs to raise THREE CENTS for charity (and eat up that three cents when you mail them or drive them to a destination where somebody else needs to sort through them and organize everything for you), how about you write a cheque and donate A DOLLAR? Isn't that a more useful goal than collecting over 33,000 pop tabs just out of some quirky human hang up?
Make a difference in the world by REALLY doing something, not just by pulling the tab off your can and feeling special. |

silly people. the reason they're worth anything is because so many people collect them, while collecting the cans makes much more sense, especially if you live somewhere where you can collect the deposit (five cents a can). it'd only because thousands of the tabs are collected that it's worth anything at all. Also there's a lot more metal in a can then a tab, so why not just crush the can down and turn the entire thing in, even if you can't collect the deposit? |

From Alcoa's web site (they make the aluminum sheets that are used to make ALL parts of the cans)
Are can tabs better to recycle than cans?
No. Often local charities encourage communities to collect can tabs and donate them for various causes. This is a great way to engage a community, and the tabs are fun and easy to collect. But their value is no different to a recycler than the rest of the can. It's all the same aluminum. For the sake of the environment, when you're collecting tabs, don't forget to recycle the rest of the can!

I believe this is how it works...
It has never really been a hoax. These tabs are made of aluminum. Aluminum is a popular recycling material and you can get cash for them nearly everywhere. Seeing how it would be difficult for everyone to donate aluminum cans due to the massive space these cans take up, tabs are a smaller and more portable way to donate aluminum. Here, aluminum goes for about 50 cents a pound, and maybe 70 cents a pound, if you have over 100 pounds.
The real hoax is that these tabs are more valuable than the can itself, or holds a very valuable metal inside ( I think I was told titanium ) This seems to be false, although I have no real proof. Just going by the majority of what I have read on the internet.
If you have tabs saved up, you can get money for them. Just realize they dont weigh very much at all. I would suggest putting them into aluminum cans, and crushing them down and just ship them away with some aluminum cans you have collected for a bit of cash. |

Joe,
It may be a hoax with some charities.
However, if you go to the web site for the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House at:
http://www.hainescenter.org/bdsodatabs3.htm
you will see the benefit of the tabs.
I don't know of the value of the tab for the charity except for the aluminum. But obviously there is value in what it does for the charity.
You can get a better view of this issue at:
http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/p/poptabs.htm
which has some information on the subject.

80 tabs = 1 ounce
1, 280 tabs = 16 ounces
1, 280 tabs = 1 pound = $ .34
12,800 tabs = 10 pounds = $ 3.40
128,000 tabs = 100 pounds = $ 34.00

its not the soda tabs r worth someone as a single tab, its when they are put together and start wieghing some, can the ronald mcdonald house take them to the recycling center and get paid their recycling dues.. which is probably not that much, but the money still goes help towards helping kids, and any amount of money is good. Plus by doing this you are also helping recycle, which is helping the world in two ways by bettering the earth and helping to the people on earth. |

To earn the most money from Cans:
1. Pull off tabs
2. Turn can in for deposit, if there is no deposit, crush and save the can.
4.Cash in whtever aluminum you have left.
People in my area make money by scrapping various metals. People even sell tabs on eBay. Check it out. |

I'd like to know if there's a place around Syracuse that will take bobs and use the money to donate to a worthy cause like breast cancer research, because my friend's mother used to collect them from my friends and I. She doesn't anymore, and I'd like to know where I could turn them in cause I have a bunch saved up and want to put them to use since I have other people collecting them too.
Thank you so much.

Soda cans are coated and painted and therefore need a lot of processing to reclaim the aluminum before it can be recycled.
Soda can TABS are pure aluminum (uncoated and unpainted). They can be recycled as is.
Because of this, one pound of soda can tabs is worth far more than one pound of soda cans.
However, to get to one pound, it takes far more tabs than cans. So if you do the math (you only get one tab per can), the can is worth more than the tab.
On the other hand, you don't get any more money for the can if you leave the tab on it, so it actually makes sense to remove the tabs and turn them in seperately. |
