Hoax Dye Marker?

Does anyone know if there has been any research done on dissemination of info on the internet? Hoaxes strike me as the closest thing to a real information virus in that the intent stops at the originator and it is generally through "normal interaction" (if such can ever be said for the internet) that hoaxes get passed along.
It would seem that a genuine research effort would need to create a viable hoax and then insert it into the culture and track the progess as you would a dye marker in a stream...
I don't know if I'd be more interested in the results or just the confirmation that such a thing had taken place to begin with.
