ya...why would anybody in their right minds want to diss on a tree octopus... and do they really eat peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches? Vegetarian octopuses??? niceeee!!!! im a vegetarian...and i hate jelly...i bet they go into the water, catch a jelly fish..and squeeze fresh jelly for their hole pod. that's what the tree octopus groups are called...pods. totally serious.
oh..guess what....
i got my hair cut...its really cute... |

There may not be a "tree octopus", but at least a few species of octopuses can come onto land for short periods. They've been known to travel over short exposed areas of reefs, and there are quite a few stories of octopuses breaking out of tanks at aquariums and in aquarists' private collections and exploring -- they can remain out of water for quite a while without any ill effects. They've also climbed up onto fishing boats in search of food (see http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Support/AdoptSpecies/AnimalInfo/GiantOctopus/default.cfm ). And as octopuses are excellent climbers (and rather intelligent relative to other invertebrates), who knows what they can manage in their ten minutes, a half-hour, or couple of hours exploring out of the water? No one has done the research to test their abilities out of the water yet.
Having gills doesn't mean they can't survive out of water for short periods. Lobsters, for example, can surivive for days out of water as long as they stay somewhat cool and damp -- and they have gills, not lungs. Sharks have gills, too, and some species have adapted to survive for hours out of water (see http://www.seaworld.com.au/sharkbay/sharkbay_details.cfm?sharkbay_id=7 and http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=521266 ). Blue crabs (who have gills) can survive out of water for a day if they stay out of the sun. Haven't you ever heard of aquarium fish (e.g., cichlids and freshwater eels) jumping out of a tank and surviving for five minutes or longer? Freshwater hermit crabs have gills, too, rather than lungs, and most people keep them successfully for a little while (e.g., months) without providing the humidity they need in order to thrive for years.
Just thought a little education from a marine biology major might be in order here. |

Tree Octopi are real, unlike common cephalopods, they don't rely on the common method of jet propulsion to travel, instead being a much more intelligent member of its genus. It has adapted to use a more energy efficient travel method (swinging). How else would they of had so much energy when they ambushed us several weeks ago, if it wasn't for the native two-headed ninjas, Tasmanians would've been under threat of extinction (there are only about 23.4 of us two-headed homosapiens per 1000km sq.)*
P.S. I am still recovering from severe haemorrhaging on the left side of my face.
*This does force us to breed with close family. |
