Story in a Tampa newspaper
Will we still be the Country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice???????? Think about it........
All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings. It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday?? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that.
This says it all!
After hearing that the state of Florida changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with her face covered this is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please!
IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.
I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.
We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!
"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.
If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every! citizen t he right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.
If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- delete it!

I agree 100%.
What we need to do; since our Federal and Supreme Court Judges have life time jobs and can't be fired; is impeach them and get them out of office. Then maybe they will get the hint that this is a country "That the majority RULE, with the rights of the minority protected." and NOT "That the minority RULE, with NO rights for the majority."

So if I don't believe in god I should leave the country? Is there no place for me?
I thought America was supposed to be tolerant and accepting of others. This country was also founded by people who felt very strongly about the separation of church and state. They came from a background where religion played a dominating role in governments that persecuted others just for their beliefs. Many of them were not proper Christians but, rather, naturalists in there beliefs.
Some people only see the past as they want to see it and not how it really was.

Actually, we don't speak English. America has NEVER declared a national language.
Pretty dumb of us, eh? Call your local Senator or Rep. and have him/her pass a law. Then, you can complain to the high heavens about what language America speaks.
I'd actually like it if we settled on a language. It would save millions upon millions in tax dollars on bilingual education. |

I liked how the writer contradicted themself when commenting about right to complain, but you should leave.
America was founded by people (Washington, Jefferson, and the other guys involved in the Declaration of Independence) that complained because the current system wasn't good and changed it.
Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you should give up and leave. You need to fight for your right, and that's what the people complaining about this country are doing.
America is a "ME" country right now, look at us invading Iraq without UN support for a good example of it in government, and I'm sure you see it dozens of times a day for the common man when people run yellow/red lights; cut you off; complain about not liking something (even though it doesn't affect them); etc. People worry about themselves and not society as a whole, that's what needs changed in America.
America sucks right now (freedoms constantly being taken away) and needs an overhaul or a split to satisfy people that want a change and people that don't. The country is not run on the principals it was founded on, and that's what needs fixed more than anything. |

Just an FYI to the person who wrote the letter, God is not tied to Christianity. Many religions have belief in God.
"In God We Trust" is belief in a higher being. Christianity is more a worshipping of Jesus Christ, altough it does acknowledge God and His word. It doesn't say "In Jesus Christ We Trust." |

Then why don't all Americans speak Navajo, Cheyenne, or Oneida. If ever an influx of immigrants destroyed a country's culture and heritage it was the Mayflower. And as every good Christian knows, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

The only thing that's ever going to change our idiot species is when we finally realize, beyond a shadow of doubt...
That it's US against them!!!
By us... I mean humans! By them... I mean, well, THEM!
The Truth is out there...
Someday soon we'll realize that by "out there" we don't mean "out there somewhere." What's actually meant is the truth is "out there" as in "far-out!"

Mark-N-Jen, you're absolutely right--we have to do something about these giant ants. Scientists figure that if we allow them to keep breeding, they'll have driven humanity extinct within a year. |

Unfortunately Mark, Christians were the ones that populated this country......The US is trying to just put out the impression that this land is for everyone.....Not just 1 culture.....I, for one, am glad that the pushing of Christianity is somewhat leaving the picture. Allthough I do disagree with the country allowing people special privlages based on religion...... |

perhaps the writer should do some real research on our "founding fathers" before attempting to quote or speak what they had in mind....he might be embarrassed.
additionally, "in god we trust" originated after the civil war, because of religious fervor.
http://www.coinresource.com/articles/in_god_we_trust.htm
"one nation under god" was added during the 1950's as a statement against communism during the commie witch hunt years.
to refer to our "founding fathers" as a source of one's argument is absurd, our "founders" also use to burn witches.
rednecks should try reading more and becoming more educated on subjects before simply running their mouths and not their brains. then again, one is always easier than the other, isn't it? |

Listen up everyone. Most of you had excellent responses. I do think that the Indians have the best point yet, however. Nonetheless, we are all here, we voted and some of our votees won. Get a grip!
We need to make room for all kinds on this huge planet of ours. We need to consider all walks of life - animals included. Perhaps if we took all the ANIMAL LIFE as examples, we'd live as they do. They only want peace, comfort, food and to be allowed to remain as free as possible. You have to agree that being allowed those things in your day makes that day a happier one. Stop throwing stones. Smile. Live, love and enjoy life. Most of all, be kind to your brothers. |

That was written by such a hugely Bigoted Christian that it makes me want to go on a 'Jesus Lovers' hunt. Living in the south, I encounter that bull crap all the time and I can tell you that every single one of them gives a weak arguement.
Know what else? I might be American born, but I would prefer to speak Japanese or even sometimes French to my friends than English. I also am so SICK of the people in this country that I deny my American breeding and call myself Italian in respect to my Grandpa. You know your country is sad when people are refusing to aknowledge their citizenship.
I like the part that says "This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity." Well, I'm sorry but wasn't America founded so that people could be themselves, if only religion wise, without persecution? Weren't we supposed to be multicultural? I find it amusing how instead of going forwards, being more accepting, our culture is going backwards, accepting less difference among our ranks.
Bigoted Chrisitians disgust me. This country disgusts me. I can not wait to get out of here for good. |

.....>> I got this in an email from a friend. He read the first two pargraphs and sent it onward. I really couldn't believe it was from him, one of the more tolerant christians I know considering he's friends with an atheist and a pagan. He apologized afterward. He doesn't want to affiliated with those who spout this type of crap.
This should show what I think of it.
I could spout all the 'religious freedom' things that have been said before but I won't.
I leave you with this.
Keep telling people this is a Christian country and one day it will be. We'll all leave, go to more accepting countries. We'll grtow to hate the US. And why?
Because it produces things like this. |

^^^ thats my best friend everybody lol. She's the atheist, I'm the pagan. But besides what she said, we must admit that christians are self rightous. They have no proof at all that their religion has any truth whatsoever and yet the spout out bull crap about us (other religions) being wrong and how we dont belong here. Can I say again that they make me sick?
(my parents are having a talk about being god-fearing as I type ^-^) |

Who ever wrote this article is an uneducated person. First I am an immigrant and i have adopted to US way and culture, but at the same time i follow my own culture. I have become a US citizen and respect the flag, the constitution and much more. You cannont single out all the immigrants, because its not just the immigrants who do this, its American citizens who've lived here for many generations who act the same way.
I agree with you saying that we should not change the way we act, as you said our first amendment garantees us the FREEDOM of speech, so if you want to say "Merry Christmas" then do, and if you offend someone then it should not be your problem. It is other people who are close minded. And it's simple to say that JEWS do not celebrate Christmas, so are they also immigrants? think about that? If you do say "Merry Christmas" it's very simple for the other person who are polite and respectful to say "thank you but i dont celebrate"... im sure your not offending anyone.
How can you single out immigrants? Second FREEDOM of Religion is also part of the 1st amendment, which means following other religion besided Christianty. If you know someone who is not Christian and is not American, well then tell me, where they Immigrants, most likely not. |

Whether from a Christian or not, everyone in my family and culture called the season "Christmas" It's been called "Christmas" for longer than this country existed. Ant it was and is called Christmas in other languages and cultures other than in the US and I see no reason why this country should be told that it's offensive by any other culture or person and that we need to say "Seasons Greetings", "Happy Holidays" or anything else. If you don't like to be told "Merry Christmas" then like the guy said go somewhere else. I'm not changing My culture and herritage and beliefs just because someone else is offended by it.
What if my name was Christmas? Are you going to tell me that my name is offensive to others and that I shouldn't say my name, and that I should call myself Holiday or Season.
MajinRyoko if I say that your name is offinsive to me, are you going to change for me or not speak it? |

No one is asking you to change your name. You're taking this far out of context. But really now, I at least understand why you say Merry Christmas and go right ahead. I won't stop you. But there are other holidays that occur around that time and the season does not belong solely to Christmas. Take that into account.
As I said before, no one asks you to change your name. People might think you are odd for being named after a holiday but more power to you. No one is going to ask you to change your name. It was never the issue. You are not the sole person in this world. Christianity is not the sole religion in this country. Accept others or you move to another country understand? Lay off my friend. |

its amazing how people get upset by such a simple thing. if you believe in whatever you believe in then dont let anyone change that. Its simple as that. I dont care if i offend anyone. I follow my ways and well if i offend someone that means they are close minded. |

Hmm...
Interesting thread of thought.
I think the easiest thing to comprehend is that it is the reactions to the words that is troubling, not the words themselves. If you do not celebrate Christmas and some one wishes you a Merry Christmas, then why not respond with "Thank you, Happy Kwanzaa (or Hanukah, or Winter Solstice, etc.)." Remember, someone wishing you well should be taken as a gift of the spirit. And, as with any other gift, it is truly the thought (or the intent) that counts. Not the words themselves.
This country was founded by people seeking less persecution in their home countries for their beliefs and by people looking for a better life for themselves and their families.
People immigrating to this country today do so for the exact same reasons.
And, as to the words "In God We Trust" on our money, as pointed out earlier, this is a non-denominational statement. Much like "One Nation Under God" in our pledge of allegiance. God is too big of a concept to fit in one religion. And, as Jesus stated, "Judge not, lest ye be judged". God will sort it all out in the end. And wouldn't it be extremely funny on that day to see all humanity who believed in a higher good, the "golden rule", and the teachings of peace, acceptance, love and good deeds towards one's neighbor/community standing shoulder to shoulder amazed that all the bickering Man Made Religions caused for centuries on this planet ultimately made no difference to God? That will be the ultimate joke.
God made the Earth. Man subdivided it. And then started fighting over what the neighbor was doing or saying or believing.
If we are all made in God's image, then we should really treat each other better, don't you think? And, if we are not, then this is simply a waste of everyone's time and energy to fight and kill over the concept. That is the fine line to tread.
Regardless, bashing any group out of hate "lousy immigrants", "bigoted Christians", etc. is a logical error. To group all members of any group into so tightly confined a definition is truly bigoted. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Pagans, Atheists, Immigrants, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, etc., are made up of individuals. Individuals are defined as being unique. To cast aspersion on an entire group, race or religion because of the actions of a few, no matter how visible or powerful those few may be, denegrates your arguments completely and debases the groups you cite as 'the problem'. Basically, you sink to the level of those you are disgusted with.
Their actions will sanctify or condem them. Much as ours will do the same for us. Hate eats at your heart and your spirit. Love allows you to grow and recognize the same spirit in others. We all want the same thing for our families and communities. Love, health, safety, prosperity, happiness.
The native peoples of our country knew this better than we do. Live and let live. Share and share alike. Treat the land as a partner. Protect the place you call home from all harm. Be one with the Great Spirit. Respect all those you come in contact with. Respect yourself. The good of the group is more important the the good for yourself. We are all, ultimately a family. For good or bad. We are all one race. The Human Race.
peace. |
