The Brazilian congress is now voting on a project that

Amazon forest to 50% of its size.
Is this a hoax?

The Brazilian Congress was considering a bill like this, about four years ago. See here:

But they dropped the bill. That email petition is now outdated.
Here's a copy of the email as I received it once:
Dear All,
The Brazilian congress is now voting on a project that
will reduce the Amazon forest to 50% of its size. It
will take 1 MINUTE to read this, but PLEASE put your
name(s) on the list and forward this on as instructed
below.
The area to be deforested is 4 times the size
of Portugal and would be mainly used for agriculture
and pastures for livestock. All the wood is to be sold
to international markets in the form of wood chips, by
large multinational companies. The truth is that the
soil in the Amazon forest is useless without the
forest itself. Its quality is very acidic and the
region is prone to constant floods. At this time more
than 160,000 square kilometres deforested with the
same purpose are abandoned and in the process of
becoming desert, meaning that this proposal is in the
short-term interests of a few, and in the long term
interests of no one.

Well, it's not like it matters if an email petition is outdated. It's still an email petition. |

Citizen Premier - the email is outdated because the bill was never passed, it refers to a historical event which is not ongoing. The email address for the petition is no longer valid.
You might as well say it doesn't matter that the petitions to free Nelson Mandela are outdated, because they're 'still petitions'.

This matters because these hoaxes sap people's goodwill, make them think they are doing something when in fact they are wasting their time, and divert from actual current threats to the Amazon rainforest.
