Twenty Phobias

Status: Bogus fears
The BBC invited its readers to tell them what their greatest fears were, and has posted a selection of 20 of the responses. Some of them are hard to take seriously. Especially this one:

The letter Y: "M phobia is all about the letter . Ever time I tr to press it on the ke board, it makes me want to cr . I know it seems sill to ever one else, but it all started when I was a bab , and I swallowed a magnetic letter. At least that's what My mumm and dadd told me an wa ."
Paul Davies, Swindon, UK

This one also seems a bit tongue-in-cheek:

Computers: I'd like to comment, but I'm scared of computers.

hahahahah, nice one christopher in joplin.

most of these sound a bit too unrealistic especially about the guy and the computer. since he is "supposedly" afraid of computers, how the hell is he typing?

....maybe a friend did for him or something

I have a fried that is afraid of midgets (dwarves, little people) and clowns. She can be brought to near hysterics by the mere mention of midget clowns.

Friend, that is.

I have a phobia of spellcheck.

😊

I'm sure you're aware of this, but spell check programs would not catch the mistake of typing "fried" instead of "friend." That's why spell check is no substitute for good old proofreading.

One of my sister's roommates in college was, honest to G-d, afraid of flowers. Not that she had bad allergies or anything, she didn't. She was just afraid of flowers...

Now this is an obscure and irrational phobia.I used to be afraid of the song "my favourite things" from the sound of music! This is based on a real incident. Now can anyone think of the name of that!

P.S.My only idea is myfavouritethingsaphobia.

P.P.S There are a lot of strange phobias.Hippopotamonstreusesquipedalionaphobia means that the sufferer also has phobiaphobia(a fear of phobia) as hippoptamonstreusesquipedaloinophobia is a fear of long words!!!!

P.P.P.S.THIS IS NOT A DRILL ALIENS HAVE INVADED EARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow I can't believe there are others like me! I too have a specific phobia (meets DSM-IV criteria!) that is very well circumscribed to include slugs, snails, earthworms, catepillars, and larvae. Some similar sea creatures elicit the same response. I recognize that it is irrational. I don't think they're out to kill me, yet, it affects my daily routine sometimes. Being from Seattle, there are LOTS of slugs here, and after a rainy day, I walk on the sidewalk with my eyes scanning up to half a block ahead of me. And I stop in front of my house to check for snails on the steps. If there are any, I go through the garage (if there are none in the driveway). Totally wacky, I know. I am trying systematic desensitization through exposure therapy.

Alright... I have a phobia that I have donned, "Teamkillingfucktardophobia"...
Think anyone'll put that in the books?

And seriously, I want to know a name for fear of stupidity in other people.

I have a totally iratuional fear of slugs and snails, which is called Molluscophobia for all those of you that want to/didn't know.

Whereas one of my best friends has Ictyophobia, a fear of fish... we only discovered this when in Spain on a school trip and she capsized in her boat near a school of fish and then ended up capsizing the rest of us whilst trying to get out of the water away from them... we probably weren't that supportive, especially when we got back and the entire school got littered with pictures of fish right in her path...we incorporated fish into her name...oh yeah...and we even added it into the year book 😊

"what do they call a fear of offending stupid people???"
-Etiquette...but who follows that nowadays?

I suffer from molluscophobia - slugs and similar - and musophobia or suriphobia - mice and rats - although I only hate rats. Makes me sick even thinking of one and as someone who likes watching horror films, chillers and anything dark am constantly on the edge of my seat hoping that one doesn't appear. Strangely enough don't mind cartoon rats.
