The 40 Best Celebrity Rumours Ever has compiled a list of classic and contemporary celebrity rumours.

Many, many people love a good gossip about celebrities, and celebrity rumours are often used as a way to make oneself feel better - "They may be rich and attractive. They may be loved by millions, but..."

We've covered celebrity rumours ourselves before (check out our 'celebrities' category), but this list seems to be pretty comprehensive, covering everything from the Richard Gere gerbil rumour to the celebrity death hoaxes which keep floating around. Royalty to Z-listers, sexual rumours to identity rumours... the obvious truth is that if you make your living in the public eye, it's very likely that at some point, someone will be making up extravagant stories about you.

Many of the items on the list were things that were true just not public (so not hoaxy at all).

Anyway, my wife works with Richard Gere's sister so maybe she can ask her what she knows about gerbils.

Damnit, I fell for the Lou Reed one. I had no idea he was actually still alive.

The Dead People Server has a good 'Not Dead Yet' page, well worth reading. It doesn't seem to keep up with more current rumors, though.

The best celebrity rumour ever, in my opinion, is that Elton John adopted the girls from the Russian band t.A.T.u. (Known for the song 'All the things she said') It wasn't a really well known rumour, but I couldn't help but laugh as I read it.

The best "death" rumor I ever heard, and this was decades ago, concerned not just celebrities, but everyone. According to the rumor, and I forget where I read it, everyone died about twenty years ago (twenty years psat from that point, about fifty or so now) and we were all replaced by androids.

Darn it, Christopher, you weren't supposed to remember that! I'll have to check your programming for glitches now. . .

It looks like the editors of Nerve aren't content with just listing existing rumors, they actually try to start one here-- to whit, that J.Edgar Hoover may NOT have been gay.
Of the 40 tales compiled there, the Hoover-was-straight hypothesis has to be the least credible.

I think that's the new thing now Gary when it comes to celebrity / politician rumors. I know of at least one person (the guy at ) that's started making up fake rumors under the guise of parody because the stuff that celebrities actually do is just so boring.

Who wants to hear about them buying oranges at a convenience store anyway? I don't know how people report on that stuff and manage to stay awake through it all. I want to hear rumors about OJ Simpson & Britney Spears being lovers or something that are in fact geniuses bent on world domination or something.

FBI director J. Edgar Hoover was such a mean son-of-a-bitch it's no surprise that people whispered about him. Rumors that Hoover was gay or a cross-dresser have circulated for decades; one claim comes from Anthony Summers' 1993 biography Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover. Its interesting.

Best rumor going is hulk hogan hasnt actually wrestled since the late 80s except on tv. At arena events he was replaced by a stunt double who had wrestled previously as Randy Hogan (look it folks randy hogan wrestler wcw) and was an absaloute ringer for the hulk. I actually buy this.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but no way Randy Hogan could double for Hulk Hogan in the ring. Facially, they do look quite a bit alike, but Randy is about 6'1" (I'm 6'3" and am taller than he is...we used to bowl on a team together in Lakeland in 2005)

The Gerbil thing is super false. I have heard it a million different times for a million different celebs.
