Heck, comb and wattles are not a very good indicator of chicken gender. We have a hen with a comb and wattles that are much bigger than one of our roosters has. These events are actually not unheard of, either. In fact, we had a hen (different one) crow not long ago, but she only did it once. I think she lost a bet.

About the chicken thing -- apparently it's not that unusual for the hormones of chickens to play up once they start getting on in years.
