New Look

I periodically get bored with how the site looks and decide it needs to be overhauled. That's the kind of mood I was in today, so I redesigned the blog.

I'm not sure if the new look is better or worse than the old one, but it is different, which is the important thing. (I haven't yet changed the comments or permalink pages, so if you're nostalgic for the old look, you can see it there, for now.)

In another year or two I'll probably get bored of this look and change it again.

More importantly, I'm also adding a new section to the site: the Hoax Archive.

One of the problems with the site has been that, although it contains a lot of information, that information has been very disorganized. There are all kinds of stray articles in forgotten corners of the site. So I'm trying to import all that information into one central database. I'm also merging the hoaxipedia into the archive, so that everything will be in one place, and easily searchable.

There's still a lot of work to do on it. I've only imported about one-third of the site's articles into it. But since I'm unveiling a new front page, I figured I might as well unveil the Hoax Archive as well.

I like the new layout, actually. Didn't really care for the old one to tell you the truth. It wasn't bad or anything but this one is pleasing on the eyes.

The blue-on-brown text in the header is kind of hard to read.

Eh, it's not too bad. I think Alex has done some worse changes in the past.

Blue on brown text? There shouldn't be any blue on brown text, unless different browsers are displaying the site in strange ways.

How do we know this isn't some kind of hoax?

I like the new look. It was too hard to read all that UPPERCASE TEXT along the top, so I usually skipped over it. Much easier to read the new (and shorter) list of items at the top.

Which, on Mac FireFox look like yellow text on a brown background and is fairly pleasing.

The new layout looks more neat and orderly. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to the user, of course.

Looking good. Nice simple, clean look. You really really really need to choose a new font for the sidebars where it says "About the Museum of Hoaxes" and such. That font in use now is hideous and hard to read!

My only critique... well besides making the links at the top just a shade bigger. I have very good eyes and it still seemed kind of small, especially in comparison to other text on the page.

My only complaint so far is that the Hoax Forum no longer has a link to the main Forum page, only the links to recent stories.

Ahdora, it's all the way on top in the far left corner!

Oh ho! Sneaky. I'm used to scrolling down to the new topics sidebar and clicking on the Forum headline there. Ah well, now I know.

The main content should stretch all the way across the page, rather than hiding in the left 50%!

It looks correct now (yellow on brown).

Not a big fan of brown, but it looks nice enough. It's more museum-y feeling. :D

Did you ever see a yard/garage sale sign in which many color letters are used, and the fool who made it used yellow letters on white background, and the yellow letters are near invisible, leaving us with a sign that says Ya d Sa e, or Gar ge S le? Dumbasses. Also, ever notice that any sign with neon pink or vermillion letters on a blue or aquamarine background renders the wortd almost unreadable, sort of shimmering and wiggling? I have, and it makes me nuts. I'm also afraid of dead fish. It's the eyes- those damnable eyes. brrr
