Kobe Bryant Jumps Over a Car

The latest viral video going around shows Kobe Bryant jumping over a moving Aston Martin. Is it real? I doubt it, though I can't definitively prove it's fake.

Think about it. Why would he risk his career by trying to jump over a car? That's what special effects are for.

A better quality version of the video can be seen at Bryant's website.

I looked at it and I can't see anything that shows it is fake. Maybe he really did it; maybe I really don't give a shit what another worthless grossly overpaid athlete does. He was willing to risk his career by ass-raping a girl, so why not this?

The car is beside him when it drives by, not underneath him! That is how they did it. And that is why him momentum carries him to the right when he lands. The car is to his right, not directly under him when he jumps.

Looking at the shadows (and blocking the video) you see that the man is near to the camera than the car.
Like the hobbits in Lord of the rings

Video isn't really high enough resolution to tell, but I'm pretty sure I see his shadow flicker over the fender/door as the car passes by. Took out stills of the jump, hard to say for sure:

I suppose a math smartypants could calculate the distance of the objects from the camera using known heights and the shadows.. but I'm not a math major so it won't be me doing it.

If you pause the video at about 36 seconds right when the car comes into the frame you can see that Kobe is closer to the camera than the car. Which means he didn't directly jump over the car.

This isn't hard to figure out.

1) Neither his contract with the Lakers or his contract with Nike allows him to do anything like this and he is specifically prohibited from participating in a long, specific list of activities that would likely damage him physically.

2) the giveaway is that the angle of the shadow coming off the front of the car is slightly, but noticeably different than the angle of the shadow projecting from Kobe's ankle. You'll also notice a slight frame rate shift from the footage on the roof with Kobe right before the composite of the car enters the frame. The footage on the roof is slowed slightly to keep Kobe airborn until the car is practically moved out from under him.

The shift in Kobe's jump that others are noticing is actually just a problem with the two camera setups - this IS NOT a practical in camera illusion - it's most definitely a composite.

This is not real, but who cares, it is a funny neat video. May god, Kobe sneezes and everyone has to debate it. I agree with David B. his contract would never allow for it. Plus, if you like the Lakers or not the team is trying to make a run at the playoffs, Kobe would never risk that.

Everyone just needs to appricate this for what it is--- entertainment!

He is on a downward slope and if you have ever been in an Aston Martin you know that they are very small and compact cars. The speed of the car combined with Kobe's jumping power, his only risk was that of not jumping at the rigth time. He jumps over tall people ever day I'm sure a small sports car is nothing. Now go buy his shoes!!!!

I'd be more impressed to see the Aston Martin jump over Kobe. Now, "when I was a kid", the main Aston Martin to have was James Bond's model, with the oil spray, tire shredders on the wheels, and an ejection seat that chucked you out the moonroof. Hate to see somebody press THAT button while Kobe jumps over it... He'd be walking around with 007's head up his ass...oww

it's is obviously not real. All u have to do is use ur head. If you look at his shadow when his body is fully extended the shadow changes abruptly, and also the way he lands is slowed down or controlled by an outside force. Because when u jump that high and land that softly ur not human. Just look at the very ending of the jump and u'll know it's not real.

thats still hella high to jump and hangtime even though he didnt really jump over it.

Ok. Check this out.

Look closely, you would noice that Kobe's right foot is on the tip of the right side of V-shaped shadow on the floor. Also notice that the Left fender of the stunt car was also by the same part of the same side of the V-shaped shadow when it zoomed past. Therefore, it is evident that Kobe truly demonstrated his amazing vertical leap and hand time, akin to his on-court performance, except that he did it on the left side of the moving vehicle.

Also like David B. rightly mentioned, Kobe, like every other professional athlete is bound by a contract which prohibits him from participating in activities that have a potential to endanger his career.

Well what part of that is not real , except taking the risk ??

Its the timing .

Number of seconds when you up and the number of seconds needed by the car to cover like 3 feet.

Get real.

You can see his shadow go along the car as it go's by, because he is closer to the camera then the car...and he's just jumping big...not really jumping OVER it just looks that way. So FAKE!!!

it was real, I tried it with my 68 caddy and wasnt that successful. Props to Koby!

Obvious composite.
The shadow under the car is blacker than the shadow of Kobe or the fixed object behind the camera. This is most notable at the nose of the car. The shadow should project the same shade of gray at the outermost edge, but is much darker.

You are all idiots. it's a camera trick.

Posted by O_o  on  Sat Apr 12, 2008  at  03:11 AM
His shadow/reflection is on the side of the car as it passes by.

If everyone would please divert there attention please to shadow on the ground of the lamp post, take notice that when koby walks through it the shadow is still visible, nor when the speeding car passes over it does it show on the side of the car. Koby did jump, but not the car notice his shadow to the extreme rigth side of the car. Does this look real yes. Does that make me want to run out and buy a $200 dollar pair of shoes, well no but it still looks darn good.

You know it is certainly possible with Kobe Bryants vertical leap of 35" or better that he could physically jump a moving 'convertible'. That being said, there is no way the L.A. Lakers would allow the league MVP to risk injury in performing such a stunt.

Oh he could do it, but why risk your career. After all, your contract with the shoe company pays more than your 'day job', if playing basketball for a living is really a job at all.

i don't think he did it i mean have u heard of a computer. He'd be lucky to jump half of that
Posted by Albert  in  El Paso  on  Sat Apr 12, 2008  at  11:39 AM
There is NO way the Lakers would let him do that and risk hurting himself. And also BTW, it is only rape when the bitch decided she wasn't going to get him to leave his wife! I am a girl and you can't cry rape just because you get your feelings hurt. She wanted it......bad. And with how often that shit is thrown in their faces everyday it is no wonder there are so many cheating superstars!

Fake; shadows from the back of the car and KB don't line up right; two different light sources

You can easly see it's fake.

The car is further back then he is, you can see it because of the proportions.

Kobe is one of the best known 'results' of the science of mechanics for the optimum projection angle for achieving maximum horizontal range of 45

Not only could this simply be a trick of angles by having one object closer to the camera than the other, it could have easily been spliced in - two seperate videos, one of the jump and one of the car - cut together and combined. You need to remember that technology and graphics manipulation nowadays has come VERY far, and they can easily make something look very real when it's not.

It's only amature jobs that make it painfully obvious when the videos have been spliced.

I am not too sure, but the question is CAN this big man Kobe really jump over this car, yes? Not the DID he jump the car or WOULD he jump this car, but CAN, CAN, yes? I, Raoul, Great Jumper of Many, believe that this big man Kobe COULD jump over this car. But, he DID not, because the pictures tell lies sometimes, no? Like a bitter lover, who will not allow you to share the gifts you have been given with others, yes? Like someone you might meet at the Malls or the frozen food sections, okay? Not someone who you have to call on the 900 numbers or the Blackberry things, NO, simple, beautiful apparitions of sensual beauty, awaiting an opportunity to flower and bloom, that would give you the number or email after moving the cart from the aisle. Lying pictures. Bastards.... Hah ha ha, Raoul is only fooling you. I don't have no stinking blackberry! I use soap! Ha, oh, ow, I am too sorry, but you stepped in that one, for sure, Yo. Rrrraoul

If anyone really think it's real, just slow down the video while the car is driving by. You'll see that there's NO ONE DRIVING !!!!

Besides, the only ones out there who think it's real are those damn Laker fans.

Nike did tons of these, many in Europe with one of my favorite footballers, Wayne Rooney of Manchester United.

Here are a few vids from YouTube:
