Nokia Speed Trap Detector

According to an email urban legend, certain models of Nokia phones have built-in radar detector that you can activate via secret code. Obviously this can't be true. But what I'm curious about is if a radar sign actually will appear on certain models if you follow these instructions. I could imagine bored engineers programming this in as a joke. Since I don't have access to a Nokia phone I can't test it out. Here's the email:

Nokia Speed Trap Detector
The settings for radar speed traps detector.
Your Nokia cell phone can be programmed to pick
up radar speed traps, when programmed your cell
phone picks up the radar and alerts you on the
message alert tone. ( Doesn't work with Nokia
7110! )

1. Enter your menu
2. Select settings
3. Select security settings
4. Select closed user group
5. Select on
6. Enter 00000
7. Press ok
8. Clear back to normal, within a few seconds
your phone will display a radar sign with five
zero's next to it. It is now activated.

Unfortunately only Nokia phones have this
function. Cell info display needs to be de-
activated. Settings -> Phone Settings -> Cell
Info display
Each time you turn off your phone, or even each
time you loose contact with your carrier, you'll
have to activate it again... It is done by steps
1 through 5, but the number (00000) will be
already on the field as default.

They do work! Testes on Nokia 8250, Nokia 5120, Nokia 8310 (all these are classic Nokia). Works like charm for me. Countries tested in: Malaysia and New Zealand. It is not urban legend! The speed detection appearantly function according to the band use by local police to set the speed trap! Cheers! http://i.am/davidlim, http://davidinauckland.blogspot.com

Dear All;
The closed groups at NOKIA is for push to talk security settings and it has nothing to do with Radar, the radar sends a high frequency waves that can not be detected on the same wave length of your Mobile recievers, besides that if you joined a closed Group and you do not have a push to talk Subscribtion your mobile credit or Bill will be charged through any one who contacts you or your group and that what you will see in your next bill, take care of that and Dany kindly not to post such a trick again, i am sorry for that if you do not know it but if you know that will be a problem for you i think as for others

Ah, Mr Dubai,

It does however work in some countries. It worked for me on a GSM network in Taiwan. No additional charges were on my account. It may work that way in some countries and on some networks. It may not be intended to work, but does. However, as we can see from the mixed results that it doesn't always work. What may be missed is related technology that works in conjunction with the radar traps, this I think we will find is what the Nokia picks up on and not the radar itself. For example, some speed camera technology in some countries are connected to a SIM to send data out. Call it bollocks if you like, it may be bollocks on your network or for your local fuzz, but may work for some.

Hi all, I live in the island of Crete (southern Greece) and I decided to test this on my N73! And yes it worked... my mobile phone started beeping the sms message tone 100 meters before the radar!!!! Oh, one more thing: to test if this really works, you have to be in an area with functioning radars... if the radar is there but it's out of order then you will not be able to test if it's true or not.

Trapster is a free service that allows users to share the location of police speed traps using their mobile phones. The system uses the phone's GPS capabilities and the Internet to instantly alert other users as they approach the reported trap.
