Hoax Photo Test Answers: Level Two
REAL  This photo was taken on the Earlham Road in Norwich. Underground chalk mines caused a massive sink-hole to appear in the road. The bus fell into the sink-hole. HOAX  It would be quite a shock to look out your window and see a party of polar bears on your front lawn, but it never happened. If you look closely you can see that the section of the picture with the bears in it was digitally inserted into a scene of a suburban house. HOAX  The tall woman on the left in this picture is a real woman. Her name is Heather Haven, and she has her own website that includes many photos showing off her above average height. But this picture in particular shows evidence of having been digitally altered. To the right of her legs you can see a region where the shadows and light don't match up with the rest of the picture, evidence of a clumsy cut-and-paste job. REAL  A plane crash captured by a National Geographic photographer in Guatemala in 1976. REAL  A cat named Auan, living on a farm near Bangkok, befriended a mouse, named Jeena. This photo was taken by Reuters photographer Sukree Sukplang in August, 2002. REAL  Sometimes cats get groomed like this if their fur has become too matted. Without fur on their body, their heads can look oversized in relation to their body. The cat in this picture looks rather embarrassed by the indignity of its new appearance. HOAX  This was the cover of the Aug. 26, 1989 issue of TV Guide. It looks like Oprah, but in reality it's only Oprah's head. The body belongs to Ann-Margret. The composite was created without the permission of Oprah or Ann-Margret. REAL  It's hard to see how all the corn manages to stay in the truck, but nevertheless this scene is real. It was captured by Reuters photographer Antony Njuguna in Somalia in September, 2003. REAL  The strange poster held by this protester was created, unintentionally, by a poster maker in Bangladesh. He downloaded a picture of Osama bin Laden from the web that showed Bin Laden sitting next to 'evil Bert'. He didn't realize the satirical intent of the picture, and so included it in the poster. HOAX  An image created by nature photographer Ralph Clevenger. It's actually a composite of four different photographs taken in Alaska, Antarctica, and California. |
